Sweatervest's 125g at One Year...

Hi All,
I started my 125g tank on July 27th 2011... It has been a great year. I have had so much fun building this tank, and filling it with life. Although this is not my first SW tank, its definitley the largest and the most expensive project that I have undertaken. I went into this project with every intention of "doing it right", what ever that means. You can check out my build thread from last year https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/385156/sweatervests-125g-reef-build
I will say that if I had to do it over again, I would for sure make some changes... But I have always been a hands on learner, so I would not trade the experience for the world. I wanted to have a nice reef tank that I could be proud of. I really liked the look of a lot of the SPS corals, and most of the LPS corals. There are some soft corals that I don't mind but I wanted to go slow with corals and try not to pack it up with corals that I lose interest in and want to take them out (thanks Eric B 125... He went through and took out a lot of softies and went more SPS). I have some GSP and Zoa's and Polyps that I try to keep from taking hold on the rock work. I got my first SPS maybe 4 months ago (I really need to get better at getting the names when I buy them, cause I really have no clue what a lot of them are) and have concentrated mostly on Acro's, but I did get a nice sized Monti (purple). I have also found that I have a fondness to plate corals.
As for fish, I started the tank with a couple of transfers from my 29g, a clownfish and a coral beauty angelfish. I lost the coral beauty the first couple of months. I wanted something with movement and went with some blue green reef chormis. Seven to start, 1 died with in a few days of being in QT and 1 more a month later, but the other 5 all made it through QT and into the DT they went. I have a LMB, and another clownfish... I liked the look of the Bangai Cardinal, I thought about doing a pair but decided on a single. I added my first tang a few months ago, I went with a Flame Fin Tank (or a Tomini Tang, I have also seen it called a bristle toothed tang). So far so good with all the fish. No real issues. I QT all fish for 6-8 weeks. They all look healthy and eat well, my black and white misbar gets some fin nipping by the chromis, but he is a tuff guy...

Well enough of the story, here are a few (maybe a lot) pics. I know that I am no pro and to the trained eye one could see lots of issues with some corals and the tank. I will say that this tank is in a constant state of flux, and I am always working on something (excuse the background, and some white on SPS corals).

They are some beautiful pictures! I love the spectrum of your lighting as well. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks man!! I appreciate it. I recently changed bulbs from 20k back to 15k MH's. When I first changed to 20k I loved the blue... It was like, wow, you know?? it really made things pop. But I always found that it blue-washed everything. It looked like it was just all heavy actinics T5's and not MH. I ran the 20k ones for like 10 months... I bought the fixtures and they came with the 15k, but swapped out for the 20k. I was noticing a lot of excess algae and I have a clam that was getting whiter. I put back the practically brand new 15k and the tank seems to really like them. I like the look, it has a bit of blue but not that heavy wash.
There is a pic of the Zoa's same pic but under each different light bulb. Kind of cool...

WOW......I love everything!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!! Do you know how each person is their own hardest critic?? That's how I feel about sharing pics sometimes. I just don't ever feel that the tank is ready. I am going to put a better background on soon, and build a canopy for the lights to match the stand. But I figured that everything is always changing and my tank will never be static so for the one year anniversary I should post some pics up.

Thanks dude!! I can't wait to see your 110g a year after it has been set up.

Your welcome. It really does look very pretty - and clean, which is what a lot of people can't pull off. Your tank will look a lot more grown in and full with a few more corals and time, and I, too, will be envious.
Yeah, I can't wait to see some progress on my 110g. It's slow going because of our incomes right now - and on top of that, I am going back to school this August. I will hopefully be able to get started on it in January or so. When I can, I will buy a hole saw and what I need for the beananimal overflow soon. If the glass doesn't break, I'll keep the 110g. If it does break I got my eyes on a 180 at a friends. :D

Thanks Achilles!!
I am still looking at background ideas. I have not made up my mind yet.
I want a canopy to hide the lights better. So I will have to make a background choice soon.

Hey there Mr. Limpid!!
Yup these are shots from July when the tank turned 1. LOL There are some in there from when the tank was getting setup and some through the year.
Rocks clean?? LOL. I would argue that they are not that clean. I would say that since July I have been getting some algae on the rocks. The T5's an MH's were about a year old and I think that is the major culprit. I took the T5's off line, and replaced the bulbs on the MH's. You can see that the old MH's were 20K bulbs and the new ones are 15K (the ones from the trader website... Nothing good at all but it had been working). This has helped a little but I still have algae.
I really need to bulk up my CUC. Right now it consists of:
2 skunk cleaners
2 Mexican Turbo snails.
15+ Nassarius snails
10+ AstreaSnails.
30+ Hermits.
I had tried the Margarita snails and they just die (cold water snail). I need to order a bunch of snails. I think that this will help the algae a lot.
I am thinking about getting:
6-8 more Turbos
15+ more Nassarius
20+ Cerith Snails
0 more hermits... LOL.
What do you guys think?? Anything I should add for CUC?
As for the clowns. I have two clowns. Both Ocellaris (one orange and white, the other is a black and white mis bar). I have seen people mix pairs of clowns in bigger tanks. Not my fav.. .So I will stick the just the two I got. Plus they are the only fish that seem to go after my arm when its in the tank... I don't need to add more.

Thanks for looking Jack!! Appreciate it!!

good idea not adding hermits they ate all my snails in my tank, but since it is fish only i went with hermits. In my reef I have snails and 1 hermit. I through him in there to eat the detritus and clean rocks because the cerith that suppose to go on rocks per my glass. since I added a emerald and he is doing a great job on the rocks, the hermit hasn't bothered anything so have left him in.
That's funny about your clowns I thought I saw two sets of clowns must of been a reflection from the glass.

Yeah, sounds like you have enough hermits. Heh.
Personally I think you should go with 1 turbo per 10g of tank, and 2 grazers (astreas) per 10g. I'm not a fan of some people's "1 snail per gallon" rule...I think it's terrible overkill. I'm not sure if you need 15 more Nass. snails...30-ish in the tank seems kind of a lot. Depends on the size, I suppose. How big are yours??
What are your thoughts about cerith snails? I've only ever had a couple before, but I was thinking about adding them when I was at the LFS doing a CUC purchase today.

Ya, I am done adding hermits. The LFS around me sends out coupons every couple of months for hermits and Astreas for $.59/each. So I usually pick up some when I have the coupon (just the snails from now on!!). I have read that the cerith snails do a good job and I think I have heard them called a hermit crab like snail (either that or hermits love their shells, LOL).
All I know is that I do not have anything close to enough of a CUC. Maybe I'll order from SWF.com for my bulked up CUC. I will not be ordering any reef packages that's for sure. A la carte for me!!!

Thanks!! I want to take some more pics and see if I can see how much coral growth. I know there is some but I want to start documenting it a bit.
But yesterday I knocked over 3 SPS frags that I had super glued to the rocks. That stuff does not seem to hold for me. I have some epoxy to hold LR together. I might try using a small amount of that to secure the corals. I hate coming in to look at my tank and seeing a frag sitting on its side in the sand from falling off the rock. Ugg.
