The Chalk Basslet, Serranus tortugarum, has a brown/red body with beautiful silver striping marks across its back. The Chalk Basslet grows up to three inches and should be kept in a tank of at least 30 gallons, and no smaller than 90 gallons if kept in a pair. If you are keeping more than one, it is suggested to add them at the same time to avoid aggression. This Basslet is semi-aggressive and should not be kept with peaceful fish in a small tank, but will be less aggressive in a larger tank. (generally should not be kept with Gobies or Hawkfish). They prefer tanks with plenty of live rock for hiding places where they will spend some of their time. The Chalk Basslet is quite a hardy fish making it easy to care for, and is a good fish for aquarists looking to diversify their tank. The Chalk Basslet should be fed a carnivorous diet that consists of Brine and Mysis shrimp, live or frozen, with feedings twice a day. They will thrive in a temperature range of 72-78°F and a pH of 8.1-8.4.
