I replaced my CC with LS last Saturday and so far so good. I just wanted to say that I think my tank looks a thousand times better. It really makes and unbelievable difference in the way the tank looks. It make everything look so much cleaner. I must say it's the best thing I've ever done to it.

Add the sand in with no water. Use plastic bags to cover the sand. Get a bowl and place it in the middle of the tank. Add water by pouring it into the bowl and having it overflow. Continue to add the water and eventually the bags will rise keeping the sand from going all over the place. Your tank will not cloud doing this method. I did it with mine with very fine sand and the tank was clear in about 2 hours. Good luck.

scubanut,
Glad to hear of your success. I agree. My tank never looks better than since I replaced cc with sand!
Scott,
Assuming you already have your tank set-up with fish, lr, etc, etc. you can't use Y2's advice.
Instead, remove most or your current substrate. Depending upon the size of your tank, this can take some time. I removed my cc once a week, at water change time, over a four week period. Don't remove all the cc....leaving some will help seed your sand with bacteria, etc.
I took a plastic cup, filled it with sand and lowered it slowly into the tank. When the cup was at the bottom, I s-l-o-w-l-y poured the sand out. The water was cloudy for less than one day. I used "live" sand....wet in a bag, and I didn't rinse it.

I drained all of my water that I could into a 36 gallon trash can and put my LR, Inverts in the can with a powerhead. I then removed my CC wtih a net. When that was out I poured the sand directly into the tank. Any loose particles floating around I dipped out with the net. I then returned the water using the above mentioned bowl method, and returned LR and inverts. The water was only cloudly overnight. I did not rinse the sand at all. Make sure you get all inverts, snails, shrimp. I forgot my CB shrimp and thought I buried beneath 150 lbs of sand. I then added a detrivore kit from Inland Aquatics. It is doing great. I have had it since Feb. 2.
