I have a 130 gallon, Heres what I did with mine a while ago... I also had CC and wanted to switch to sand. ( Im very happy with the sand).
1st get all your containers,heaters,blah,blah,blah...you know what I mean..
2nd have enough PREMIXED water available to replace any lost in the transfer..HINT..you WILL need more than you think.
3rd start draining water into containers, transfer livestock, corals, etc to the containers.
4th HERES the important part..drain water down as close to the CC as possible WITH|OUT diturbing it...I think I left an inch of water just to be safe.
5. Start scooping..A dust pan works fine...you wont believe how nasty this stuff is....
6. Once clean...add sand ( I spent the extra money and got ALL live sand )
7. Start replacing rock,water,etc... ADD the premixed water to replace the 1 inch of water you got rid of.
8. Me and a buddy did mine from start to finish in about 3-4 hours. I did not lose 1 fish, coral, clam etc.. I did have a very small cycle and diatom outbreak that cleared up in no time.
9. This is my 2 cents...it worked great for me. I would not replace a little at a time..you will never get ALL the CC out unless you take everything out. I know it seems overwhelming but its really not a big deal. Good luck.
