T-5 's

I am looking into buying the T-5 retrofit system. Has anyone had any experience with them. Good bad or other? I am thinking of the 4x 54watt for my 55 tank. Is this a good choice?
Thanks

The actinic lamps aren't as blue as I would like, but they look great anyway. I think you will be happy with em they give an awsome sparkle to the water.

thanks c_bell. Is the lack of blueness strickly visual or are they missing some spectium that "true actinic" bulbs have?

Good Question......I dont think its a spectrum thing. It might be that the day lights are so bright. On the web site they are listed as true actinics. Its could just be a visual thing, I upgraded from NO floresant strip lighting.

a couple shops in my area carry them. one had a canopy set up with 4 of them and flicked it on for me. i literally could not look at it without discomfort. in my experience this is not the case for similar length tubes of vho.
i think my favorite thing about t5 is that the reflectors fit on the bulbs themselves, you do not need a reflector mounted in the canopy. this also allows you to rotate the reflector at angles other than straight down if you want to throw the light either towards the front or the back of the tank for example.

I heard you can run T5's wiht a regular VHO Ballast. Is this true? And if so, will T5's decrease the WPG ratio needed for corals?

yes you can use the vho ballast i got the workhorse 7 and it handles 4 bulbs 54 watt each one and i think tha its bright enough to handle pretty much any coral thats what i heard from the pet store

I just ordered a workhorse 7 setup today. I'll have it up and running as soon as it gets here. I didnt order the bulbs yet, i'll pick them up from my lfs when the ballast arrives.
I'll post and let ya know my opinions when it gets here.

The thing that has me concerned is that every site I check on with T-5's say that it is only effective 18 inches deep. My tank is 24" deep, and anything near the bottom will not get enough light.

You can always just place your light sensitive corals up higher on the liverock.

would a 36" 4 bulb setup with teklight hood use less energy than a 36" 2x 96 watt PC set up?
Im guessing that teklight is rust proof right? because i do not plan on hanging it

i just bought a teklight hood for my 55 gallon hood, i had limited space for light. So i got the 36" 4 bulb set up, it was 376 dollars total.... man thats 2 weeks of work for me. I bought 2 03 bulbs, 1 blue bulb, and one sun bulb.
Does anyone have pics of their tanks? and could you describe your setup a little
thanks

Do you have a DSB? subtract that from 24". What is left, how much grows in that area?
My tank is 24", 5" DSB, that leaves 19". Not much in that last inch is there to grow. Also it's not like the light stops at 18" and leaves the rest of the tank dark. Some of the light gets there, enough for lower light stuff.;)

On my 55 gallon I have 4x 54w T5's with the SLS reflectors. I have 2- 65k bulbs, 1 blue plus, and 1 03 Atinic. I have them on independent ballasts so that I can do Dawn/dusk. I can probably take a picture of anything if you want.
