Girlfriend just brought one home from the LFS. Usually I know as much as possible about what i buy for the tank but this time I'm a little unprepared. Where should the maxima go in the tank- on the sand bed or on the LR?

Thanks Reef- I have 150w MH on a 29 gal. Calcium, alk, ph all are good too. Do they NEED to be on the rock or just prefer it?

They need to be able to attach themselves to a rock. Now you can place the clam on a flat rock on the sand bed...

sorry to hijack
do deressa clams require rockwork also, I have had my deressa clam on the rocks for a few weeks now and all seems to be ok.

Clams can only move to an extent. They can't climb or anything... about all they can do it bounce around using there foot and make small adjustments.
The Derasa Clam is a sand bed clam.

The sand provides a surface that the clam can be comfortable and work itself into. On a rock, there is no give. Placing a clam on a rock also leaves the possibility of a clam falling off the rock into an undesirable position as well.
As long as your lighting is suffiecient to penetrate to your sandbed with enough strength to house a clam I would recommend putting it on the sand.

but that is not a natural place for the clam. if the clam is used to rock cropings in the wild you would have to think that this is better for it. plus with the darker color clams they definately need more light. maybe putting them up on the rockwork helps with light penetration. I have a deressa clam and he is way up on the rockwork and seems to love it.

I have my clam on the rockwork in the middle of the tank. It is darker colored (dark brown with bright blue spots).

Maxima clams should be placed on a rock. They will attach themselves to the rock and even bore into the roch with acids they produce. They are very well suited for being on rocks... again you can place them on the sand bed if you place a rock under them. Also make sure your lighting will be good enough with the clam being so low.

WOW, really
adding that much phyto can really compramise water quality, I dont think they need to eat that much. I add 2 drops of phyto in my 125 gal once every week or two. and I have allot of filter feeders. the clams will get the nutrience they need from the photosinthetic (spelling) algie in their body and the lighting you provide for them. I would only add phyto if you feel the lighting isnt strong enough, then you can suppliment with phyto.

Small clams do need feed. Until they reach 4" or so they do not have enough mantel to produce enough nutrients from light and heavily depend on captured food. They should never be directly feed however... just add the food to the water. I agree feeding a lot of filter foods will compromise water quality so be careful.
