I've been reading a lot on lighting for corals and I ran across a deal on some t5 ho ballast and bulbs. It comes with 2 10000K bulbs 54watts each (108 total. It says that since they are HO it is equevelent to 216 Watts, not sure I believe that, havent seen that anywhere else. My question is, would these be strong enough for some mushrooms and other easier corals?

It is a standard 55 tank, so i guess about 21 inches or so...

Do you think it would be ok to do a leather toadstool? The site says that it’s easy to care for but I'd rather get everyone’s opinion on here personally.

I'm a little confused. Are you looking at the 216w fixture or 108w fixture? If you're going for the 216w one on a 55g, you should be good with most soft coral and most LPS, so the mushrooms and leathers will be fine. If it's only 108w, consider getting the 216w instead.

i think he meant 108w. the leather just put top 1/2 of tank. toadstool likes good light and medium flow. ake sure to flow off debris off the toadstool 1x a week.

I'm kind of confused with the site way of putting it as well... I would post the link but I dont think that is allowed. What is says is 1 x 54w 10000k blue and1 x 54w10000k white (Total Output 108w=216w For T5-ho). I'm not sure about the colors because I know for a fact that 10000K is not white light, closer to the blue/purple range.

I believe that the intensity of that fixture will equate to a stronger wattage than what the bulbs say if the system has individual reflectors. If not then they IMO are slightly more intense than std PC's.

10k is daylight white, the blue actinic lighting is a different K rating @ 420 or 460 nm depending on the bulb.

That's what I figured, my thought is that it's the Nova Extreme, which seems to be a common thread subject, and it doesn't have individual reflectors. Of course, I could be way off... I probably should have asked what type of fixture it is.

10,000k is more yellowish/white.
48" high-output T5 lamps are 54w. If you have two you have 108w not 216w, doesn't make sense...
Even if it was an Icecap ballast and the bulbs were overdriven it's still only 166w (an overdriven 54w bulb runs at about 83w).

I'm confused on this, in chemistry when we went over the light spectrum we learned that true white light was 5300K. Are bulbs rated by spectrum or wavelength or both?

What he is comparing is a NO bulb @54 watts and a 54 watt HO bulb. In comparason the HO bulb equates to a more intense light. I agree, but to say how much more intense, there is no way to tell in numbers.

I would be cautious here, no name, and the total output ratings are IMO not acurate at all.
