I visited a fish store in san francisco today and saw all their reef tanks without splash cover. I opened one of their exotic reef tank canopy and saw lot of dry salts atttached to their PC bulbs, the rep said they cleaned off the salt once a week. I assume the reason to take off the cover is to have enough intensity for the clams and inverts that require lot of light. is this a good thing to do and will it hurt the pc bulbs. your opinions please.

My guess is that if the lfs did it, it should be safe. The only thing you'll have to clean the lights more than if you had the splash cover.
