Taking apart light fixture

Is it possible to take apart a light fixture and re-use the system? the reason I ask is because I have a 48" Coral life power compact light (130 watts (2x65)) that I would like to salvage and use on my 30 gallon long (30") but I am not sure if this is a wise or stupid idea... anyone who is good with lights please help

Is it possible? Certainly.
If you are up to snuff electrically and mechanically, you can certainly do it. Anything that can be made can be unmade.
Of course, manufacturers sometimes save money by using molded sockets, custom wiring assemblies, etc so you sometimes have to supplement with new components.

Just lable everything BEFORE you take it apart.A to A B to B.What ever works for you.I took a 72in 4 light 2 fan fixture with moon lights apart.Cut the reflector in half and reinstalled it into a 48in hood.I also made it with 4 power cords.Just LABLE EVERYTHING!

I mounted the ballast on the rear of the hood.I put cord switches on each power cord.At some point I eliminated the cord switches and just plugged each cord into a separate timer.

Do you have any pictures so I could see what it should look like? I am taking my 48" and trying to use it for a 30", no sense in buying a new fixture that has the same watt output and such

Funny because now I have a 72in tank so I'll need to remove the lights and make a new hood and put the lights back in one line.Like you said no point in buying new lights, at least not now for me.Need to buy other things like a bigger skimmer.

Did you take the fixture apart? How did it go?
