I use a kiss method to reef keeping. Vsv and vodka dosing etc is irrelevant to me. I don't overstock my tanks enough to do any of that mess.
I'm not on a pedistal. I hate that you all are taking it that way. I was simply stating that it's no longer a challenge to keep standard tanks and I don't have the funds to do and get what I would really want to do.
I don't expect profit from aquaculture. Break even perhaps. But, mainly doin it for entertainment. Challenge. Thrill. A new aspect of the hobby.
Maybe I worded everything wrong. Maybe you all are putting me on the pedistal and when I say something you all take it the wrong way. I don't really care anymore.
I am as you say, discouraged and bored and looking for something new and exciting and these comments is what I am met with? From who I consider friends?
Not beating your golf balls there buddy, but you stated my exact point.....Your not thinking outside the box......"standard tanks".....It's not a money issue my friend.....I got into this hobby over 20yrs ago as a single military father raising my daughter on my own with a very tight budget always being deployed on top of it.....When I couldn't afford whatever; I spent a lot of time in the shop or garage building....Trading services to get what I needed.....
You have to "push" yourself no matter what is it in life......

i have been keeping saltwater fish/corals/critters for hum....28 years now. hell yea i get bored with it.i have also went to the gym for that long..hell yea i dont feel like going some days.but i think if i gave either up i would lose part of who i am.now that i started piano i get more excited to play that than the fish or the gym but i still get them done because its part of my life routine.oh yea volunteer at the fire station.now that i think about it i keep pretty busy.
point is i bet everyone here has had the ol' i am bored and should i give up the hobby thing .truth is i would miss it.
i say you are going to love the challenge of the breeding.well as long as it works at least one time
by the way i didnt see your post as being arrogant...but i am from NY so kinda used to it

"Vsv and vodka dosing etc is irrelevant to me."
VSV Vodka-Sugar-vinegar dosing is something I have been doing some research on lately. a single carbon dosing, say vodka only. will tend to produce a dominant strain of bacteria in the biomass, not to the exclusion of others totally, but dominant nontheless.
"This trend towards a single dominant strain within a biofilm is a bad thing because no single bacterial strain is genetically coded (i.e., able to synthesize the necessary enzymes and sideophores, and demonstrate adequate Monad kinetics) to do all of the chemical reactions required for the biogeochemically balanced, "low nutrient" water column chemistry that Acropora species, and their allies, prefer. Multiple bacterial strains living in close proximity within a biofilm are required for the symphony of oxidative & reductive chemical reactions that is necessary."
Therefore I have been considering the addition of Sugar and Vinegar to my Vodka dosing regime. An experiment for sure but may be something I will consider as a long term procedure.
Interesting reading on this out there.
Here is a little on carbon dosing itself

Yeah, irrelevant and nothing else to learn. Come on dude, plenty to learn and by the way I don't have you on a pedestal at all. You are the one writing the Snakes method of everything.

Two members of my reef club have aquaculture operations. I've seen both and I wouldn't consider either one of them to be cheap. I'm sure they could each have set up my tank two or three times over with what they put into their setups. BTW, neither of the operations is particularly incredible.

Not going into corals for awhile. I'm just going to breed a couple pairs of clowns. Nothing major.
If I were to do corals, I'd use a greenhouse and sunlight. I'm talking years. I'm not going to do anything immediately. No room or money. Lol.

I for one envy you. I mean there are many reasons to no longer involve one’s self the reef tank aspect of this hobby. Lack of passion, lack of time, lack of money, lack of space, lack of being physically able to maintain a tank est. But when the reason is that a hobbyist ascends to a level of expertise that allows him or her to say that they have learned all there is to know about reef keeping , now that is special.
