Well - now I'm wondering if they are really true percs -
counting dorsal spines is really difficult with the other 25 False clowns darting around:D

Heck, here the FALSE percs are $24.00.
I also think that LFS's will see many more of the dummies in the above thread since "Finding Nemo" and then to help things out Tetra's television spot on that talk show back in June or something.
I haven't been in this as long as most of you, but I can tell you that when someone has the nerve to tell me that it's "easier than you think" or that "all you have to do is throw them in and add de-chlorinator", I want to hit them and then find out where they live.

you guys will enjoy this one....
My fiance thought she whould suprise me by giving me a Nemo as a gift. so she goes to a local LFS to buy a tank. Not knowing anything about saltwater, tanks, fish... she asks for advice. They end up selling her a .75 gallon tank with a couple of little pieces of lr and some ls, but we'll have to come back to get the clown. She takes it all home and puts water in it, gets it running. After I get home i see the tank, get pretty happy about the gift. I notice the jug of DI water, but no salt... . i ask her if she put the right amount of salt in the tank, she responds "they just told me to put DI water in and come back in two days for the clown."
I immediatly called the place she bought it from and told them what they did (no one would claim the mistake, weird huh). so they gave me enough water out of the back room that they claimed to be "cycled water."
We go back in two days to get the clown and drop him in the tank. within two days his face falls off and it dies. So being pissed as he!!. i call the people again to ask a beginner question,
'me' - "we just set up a tank two days ago can i get a fish to put in"
'LFS' - "no you can't put a fish in for atleast a week."
'me' - "so why did your store tell me two days would be enough"
'LFS' ...(long pause)..."well."
'me' - "How about you give me anouther fish"
'LFS' - "ok"

SINCE WHEN is there an operation or organization that genetically engineers fish? Does he even know the difference between the two?
Isn't the whole salt hobby in general roughly 25 years old? I mean we are still learning things. Dogs and cats are typical pets and man has been keeping them alive for hundreds if not thousands of years. My guess is the kid he's getting these for doesn't even have water in the tank yet.....
Let him find out the hard way i guess. I'm glad i've never run into a customer like that.

There are many fish that have been genetically altered... you probably just didn't realize it. All of the ones I know of are freshwater, however.

Well i spoke in terms of saltwater fish. I know they are tank raised but genetic alterations? Other than breeding a disease out of a fish which is essentially what tank raising fish is.
I just thought his comments were illinformed :) He got it from somebody whos illinformed :)

I am sooo glad we don't sell saltwater fish where I work!! I already have to deal with people wanting to put 20 freshies in a 5 gallon tank. It's soooo frustrating! I'd bet we'd have people putting nemos in goldfish bowls. It would be horrible. I would get a discount on SW fish but it wouldn't be worth it.
It's really hard to sell fish to idiots that are going to kill them after you have been keeping fish and developed compassion for them. I hate it when people say, "It's just a fish. If it dies I'll get another one." Errrrr.
Oh yeah, genetically engineered fish, aren't those glow in the dark danios engineered? Jelly fish DNA or something like that. There was a thread around here somewhere.
