I can't give you exact numbers but I see it everyday where I work. We have the largest popluation of Bermese in the country (most of which are legal) and a fairly high population of other immigratants. I work for a non-profit hospital. It is a daily occurance to have illegal immigrants come to our ER in end stage renal failure. They need emergent dialysis, spend a couple of days in ICU, then are released. Easily a $20,000 bill, usually alot more. In a week or less, the cycle starts over again. There isn't a dialysis center that will treat them because they don't have insurance, we can't turn away someone who could potentially die. Several of these patients have told me they can't be deported because they would die in their own country. I am in no way saying not to treat them....there just has to be a better way. Set up a few dialysis centers for these people, they can choose to go there or they are out of luck. It has to cost alot less than years of ER/ICU visits every week. Obviously we see many other types of medical emergencies, but this is very common. I don't know anything about the laws, but I know this happens alot.
