tall tank lighting?

hello all,
I'm new to the SW world and I am starting to set up a 110g, 30 inch tall tank. My question is what type of lighting will be strong enough to reach that deep? It will be a FOWLR.
From what I've read here on the forum is that MH is pretty much only needed for corals, will I need the MH just for the extra power?

Welcome To SWF.COM
The only real practial lighting option i see for tall tanks is MH. It is a better qualtiy of light, than VHO and PC because those use tubes, whih spread the light over the water, while the bulb concentrates more light from a smaler area. Most regular VHO or PC bulbs will penetrate that deep, but you will lose power as you get deeper. MH is the best way to go. Do your self a favor, and find some good ones on ----.

for a fish only tank any NO bulbs that are desinged for marine use so it doesnt fuel algea growth will work fine.

I agree, any NO flourescents will be fine as long as you dont want to keep any corals/photosynthetic creatures. For FOWLR the lighting is pretty much whatever pleases YOU!

Just wanted to post that even though you are just going FOWLR, I have an 80-gallon tall tank (also 30 inches) that I have as a full reef, SPS and LPS, soft and hard. I am runnig 3-96watt PCs and just make sure most of the stuff in the the middle to top area and it all THRIVES! Just in case you wanted to switch down the road :) Good lcuk!
