Tang Aggression Question

911 to the Tang Police.. :)
Are tangs aggressive towards each other of the same species when they are small or do they just get that way when they are larger. I have an opportunity to purchase a group of Naso Tangs and I want to get one for myself and a few for friends.
If they are small enough can I QT them together or do I have to farm them out right away?
Thanks

How big would the QT tank be? Exactly how many Naso's did you have in mind? And how large are the fish?

3 - 4 inches. 30 gal QT. probably 4 of them.
I am kind of the QT for a few friends so we want to order together.

I think the "stress level" would be pretty high with 3 or 4 in a QT that small, you might be ok with 2. I would say Naso are the least aggressive Tangs there are, but I still think more than 2 would be really pushing your luck....I will be curious to hear other answers though.

3-4 naso in a 30 gallon is fine for qt purpose of 4-6 weeks. lfs hold that many in one single tank all the time. hopefully ur dt is big enough for them all long term.

+1 and you are going to need a BIG display tank for those guys when they grow up!

THanks Guys. I am not going to keep more than 1 and he will go in the 220. The 30 is just the QT tank for when they arrive.

Yeah, with most tangs; 3-4 works better than 2. You often will see tanks with several tangs of the same species; but seldom with just 2.

Aside from the aggression issue (or maybe part of it) I'd step up the frequency of water changes in the QT. I suspect part of Tang aggression is environmentally related. If the water quality isn't as great as in less crowded conditions, if there's less food to go around, or if there's no place to hide and rest without running into a tankmate, I think these all contribute.
i.e. I get along just fine with my ex living in the same town with her. It's just when she borrows something without asking I get a little annoyed.

LOL, you sound like me and my ex....ha ha.....
great advice though! I never really thought about it in such simple terms before. i also didn't know about keeping 3 tangs of the same species...good food for thought.
