Tang Id

I just picked up a Tang from the LFS and need help identifying it. The store didn't know what kind it was, and I've looked everywhere online, and can't really find a match.
He is only about 3"-4" And he will get darker sometimes, and white spots will show through, but typically he stays a very light grey almost white color.

that's a juvi blonde naso tang. I cannot believe your store did not know what that is... :notsure:
The white spots, though some may think it is ich or a related disease, is just stress marks that occur in naso tangs.

I kind of thought it was a Blonde Naso... They just got him in, and he didn't look like all the other fish they had, so they labeled him as "misc. tang." They had the other Naso, and he didn't look like them.
I got him for $17...

good purchase! Make sure to keep a lot of variety in their diet and keep your parameters stable. They are not the hardiest fish at the juvenile stage so variety in their diet is essential.

Is he in your 20 gallon or do you have another tank? They are recommended for 180 gallons or above.

I have him in a 55 gallon... and I know he'll be outgrowing it shortly. I went there looking for a Kole, but he was so much prettier, and they didn't know what he was... which usually turns out to be a good buy.
I am currently feeding him flakes, as well as Brine shrimp. I also started putting in green algea. Anything else I should put him on?

yes, much more. Flakes are kinda worthless because they are not very filling, and brine shrimp is not good at all unless you fill it with vitamins. I would recommend you pick up Formula One, Frozen Kelp, Spirulina, and Mysis Shrimp.

sounds like a ***** purchase... i love when stores sell fish way too cheap. i got a orchid dotty back for 15 bucks, he was sold as a royal gramma... i saw that and jumped all over it.

I hate to rain on the parade but a naso in a 55 is a bad idea. The tank is way too small regardless of the price.

so does the author of the thread... he knows what he's doing and i'm guessing he's upgrading at some point...

Yes, I did not say that he should return it to the LFS or take it out because he obviously knows it will get too big very shortly and must have some sort of plans, whether it is to reloacate him to a bigger tank or upgrade himself. I am not sure how well it will do in the 55 to begin with, but I will give the author credit in that at least he knows something about the fish he purchased and has plans to do something about it.

Not trying to argue but I'm wondering how you know this. The author didn't know what the fish was, much less what it needs.

I'm more worried about how sick the fish looks. Something is definately wrong.

there is nothing wrong with the fish. That is how a stressed (newly acclimated) naso will look. He just got the fish he said.

i love naso but like lion crazi said its only the stress of the acclimation but my old naso tangs lasted for a month then it stopped eating. i was mad

I just got the fish a couple days ago. And I know that he will outgrow the tank in no time, but he is only about 3" right now.
I was farily sure that he was a Blonde Naso when I bought him, but hadn't ever seen a live one that small before... so he looks a little different.
I've had saltwater fish now for about 3 years, and am pretty confident that I know what I'm doing. Have never had a Blonde Naso before, hence the questions.
Please don't pass judgement. After a few months I planned on either giving the fish to a friend who has a 125 gal tank, or selling him to someone who does.
And the fish is doing quite fine in the tank so far. It's a very well established tank, and he has a lot of things to eat off the rocks as well.

I am glad to hear that. You sound like a responsible and conscientious fish keeper.
