Tangs for 4ft tanks?

I've never been a huge fan of blue neon gobies.....not really sure why, but it's not a fish that really had much "oomph" for me.
I had a friend who kept a small hippo in a 55g tank for a year, but it grew so quickly that she had to return it to the store. Gotta love stores like that -- they gave her store credit for the price she originally bought it at. Works out for everyone - she doesn't "lose" money, and the store gets to mark up the price of the now-adult fish and sell it back again. I think if you keep your rock open you'll be able to keep one for a good while.
I like the black and yellow chromis - not too many of those around. Have you checked the doctor's site lately? There are a number of new Chromis species in there...maybe we can get SWF.com to get some in as well!
The McCosker's Flasher is a beautiful fish, and one of my favorites when I had him. Best to keep a portion of the glass VERY clean with a mirror on it, so he sees his reflection and flashes more. I'm not sure how it would react to a school of Anthias....it's a question I'm wrestling with as well.

Well, I'm working on the tangs now. lol!
I think I am going for a purple tang and a chocolate/mimic tang right now.
To start off, I think I will have to use some of my current stock in my 20g:
2 tomato clowns
3 chromis
1 bicolor blennie.
I would really prefer to get rid of the tomato clowns and the bicolor blennie, but my wife has grown fond of them. I wish I could just set up a separate tank for her and let her do her thing. In fact, that gives me an idea...
The chromis are going to be going back to the fish store as well. I think I might switch them out for some awesome looking black and yellow chromis at my new fish store as starter fish.
So, for the new tank:
6 black and yellow chromis OR 3 Barletts Anthias
McCoskers Flasher wrasse
Bi-color blennie
Red scooter dragonette
Chocolate/mimic Tang
Purple tang OR Kole tang - depends on budget.
Most people have a problem not filtering their water enough - I have the problem of over-filtering my water. LOL So, I'm sure my stock list is not Heavy.
Tang Police have arrived! LOL
I'm really not a huge fan of tangs in 4 ft tanks, especially if they're not Bristletooth or Tomini tangs. The Kole would be an option, but a purple might really get too aggressive as it grows, especially with a less dominant fish. My purple is the smallest of my tangs and by far the one with the biggest set of b@lls.
If you must have the Chocolate Mimic, I wouldn't do a second tang. JMO. I would substitute with a dwarf angel. And of course, you know I'm a huge Anthias fan. I think the Bartlett's would be a nice splash of color against the other fish and would do well with that stock list. If you're absolutely set on doing two tangs, I'd go with the 3 anthias vs the 6 chromis, not even for bioload reasons, but just so the tank is overrun with fish.

Yeah, I knew with the title of this thread that there would be snarky comments.
For whatever reason, I am stuck on getting a chocolate tang. I guess I'll mix it with a kole instead of a purple. I know purples are extremely aggressive. Thanks for reminding me.
So, anyone care to make a list of gangs that are suitable for four foot tanks?
1. Yellow tang
2. Kole tang
3. Purple tang
4. Mimic/chocolate tang
5. Tomini tang
6. Bristletooth varieties?
Anyone else?

<3 you guys!
Anyways, you just want to look for Ctenochaetus sp. tangs, with exception of the Chevron Tang which is one of the larger ones of that species. One of my favorite smaller tangs that NEVER gets mentioned is the Ctenochaetus flavicauda (White Tail Bristletooth). They're a little more rare than some of the other varieties, but the colors are very vibrant and they tend to stay just a little smaller than a Kole.I have seen then in stores mismarked as Koles many times.

C. flavicuada is available at the other popular site right now. VERY pretty fish. I'm not sure I agree with you about C. hawaiiensis (Chevron).....I think as long as you're looking at a 90g tank you can get away with that animal. I know the size claims to go up to 11 inches, but honestly how many of us has seen one that size? Biggest I've seen was an adult specimen that was about 8 inches long. It WAS in a 90g tank at a fish store down here and seemed perfectly calm.

It says they're available until you click on it, then it tells you they're "not in season." :-( They've been on my wish list for quite some time and my LFS has been trying to get one for me. With how aggressive my purple tang is becoming as of late, I don't think I'm going to be able to have one anyways.
Yes, most Chevron's don't reach their max size, but I have a seen a few reach 9-10". They get ugly when full grown too!

Yeah, they turn all brown and don't have much color to them when they reach adulthood, but man are they pretty juveniles.
Sohal? Scopas?

That's why I like the White tail so much, it keeps that vibrant red throughout its life.
I've seen people keep Scopas and say they're peaceful, I have no experience with them. Sohal's get big and mean.

Scopas can be very aggressive - just depends on the one you get and tankmates....AVIOD Acanthurus Sohal - they need BIG
tanks (200+) and are one of the most aggressive tangs available - esp to most any other tang species housed with.....they are also CONSTANT swimmers and easily reach 10" in the home tank. I chose several OTHER than sohal species tangs for the 475......OR I could have housed a sohal with likely NO other tangs.
