Tangs Tangs And More Tangs

i know there are three types of tang catagories...any1 know if a naso and a powder blue are in the same group. i think there different but wanna make sure before i get
(this is somewhat the same topic...right?)

they are not in the same group. Naso is in w/ Vlamingi, Unicorn, Lopezi. Powder blue is in w/ Achilles, powder brown...

All tangs are in the Family Acanthuridae with six genera
One subfamily Nasinae, with one genus Naso ( 17 species ), all have two anal fin spikes on each side and three soft pelvic fin rays. some are known as unicorns because of their frontal "horn" bone.
The other Genus are Acanthurus ( the Powders, Sohal, Clown, Achilles, ect. nearly 40 species ), Ctenochaetus "bristletooth" ( Kole, Chevron, ect.), Paracanthurus ( one species, Hippo ), Zebrasoma ( Yellows, Purples, Sailfin, Scopas, ect. ) and Prionurus ( most get huge, rare in the hobby, more than two spikes. / / :scared: ).

I love posts like these.
Education is yet another aspect of the hobby I enjoy, Thank You! Here's a couple I took yesterday of my sailfin. Tried to shoot him moving w/ little success. :jumping:

dogstar - so what your saying is i could have one of each genera of tang in my tank? (not that im going to do that or anything, just curious)

Not saying that at all. Just outlined the groups to help due to your earlier statement of 3 groups and the species within them.
IMO one of the misconceptions about keeping tangs is just that...the same shape or color or groups as a rule. its bull.....no offence to anyone...but I have 3 different Zebrasoma sp. that play nice together but I would never mix Ctenochaetus sp. due to they jeolous feeding methods. Many species from Acanthurus are just down right mean and does not matter what you mix them with....of coures every situation or sytem is different and tank size plays a big roll in successfuly mixing different ones as well and keeping any of them long term and minimizing stress. Best to research each species individually. I think in a large system a Naso and a Powder Blue would do fine together but if the system is too small then that would bring out the aggression from the Powder because they can get territoral....Nasos are open water crusers and dont really consider territory but if confronted with agression then they can realy do some damage with their double barrel guns on their tails.....

so dogstar In your opion go you think I could add the flowing to my tank 240 gal with 200-300#LR that has:
there right now:
5"hippo
3"power brown
2"coral beauty angle
2"O clown
11/2"fire fish
would love to add
3 x yellow tang
1 x kole tang
1 x purple
maybe an achilles
allso do you run a UV?

Devaji108, I think that adding those should be OK, even the sailfin except I dont like trying the Achilles with an established Powder already in there....I think Acanthurus sp. are always a gamble as far as hardiness, as you can see from my pic, I have all on you list except the Acanthurus ....your choice and ofcourse all Tangs are tricky to add anyway due to their easy stress levels dureing the introduction period, but the tank size is fine and a lot of hideing places to escape to and sleep securly with the rock....IMO if you try then add several at once to spread the agression around and best to QT any fish first so their immune system streignthens first...I do run UV 24/7
TriGa, IMO a small Yellow or Purple should be OK in an established 75g for a couple years...
