hi, i just bought an 80 gallon tank for a friend who upgraded to a larger tank himself and, the tank i bought sat in his garage a few months.
my question is what should i do to clean it. is there any real danger to my fish when i finally do get it all set up for them to move.
thanks in advance for any replys .....

The main thing is to fill it up and test for leaks. Tanks that sit in garage or unstable temp environments can have weakened seals.
No real danger to fish. You need to find out if he ever medicated fish with copper in the past, because that would be a fish only tank at that point.

+1
Use fresh water to test the tank, then if it tests good, clean it gently, rinse thoroughly, and you are ready to set your new tank up. If you are new to the hobby, I do want to warn you though that this is a serious sickness and you may well be on a slippery slope towards doing things like, well, making SWF.com your home page

thank you both for your comment i did fill it up with water and it does not leak... do i need to re seal things to be safe or am i fine. i am new to the hobby currentlly i have a 30g tank with a pistol shrimp, a goby, 2 clowns, a blackcap basslet, and a cardinal.
my equitment on it is just a hang on protein skimmer, i want to upgrade the way i do things and put a sump on it but im limited on space in the stand. i have 3 compartments which i dont even think a 10g sump wont even fit under it.
would it be safe to cut out a portion in one of the slots so that it can slide into 2 compartments?

No you will weaken the support system of the stand , you can just build one check out the DIY section for some ideals. We want you to be successful in this hobby and you will have a lot of other things to deal with, without worrying if you tank is going to end-up in your basement because you removed something. Welcome to hobby

as far as re-sealing it i would just spot check the seams and find the spots where it is thin or just looking crummy... and then clean the tank out with vinegar water it is the bomb at cleaning lime and salt creeeeppppppp
