Tank Over flow question

I have yet another question.
You hear a lot about sump over flow, but what about tank overflow?
If I have a CPR Overflow, and somehow the Overflow loses its syphon, but my sump pump keeps going, won't this over flow my main tank? How do you keep this from happening? The only thing I could think of was putting the intake pump at a high enough water level in the sump so that would lose its syphon after a gallon or so extra went into the main tank. Is this a common method? You can't use the extra hole in the sump's pump intake, as it would lose the pressure needed to get it to the tank. Anyone have a good method to avoid tank over flow with a Hang on tank overflow?
