hello
i am setting up a 20 gal qt for under my tank in my stand,
i am going to use 20 gallons of already cycled water from a 30 gal tht is being tranferred to a 90 gallon. so the filter as well will be being used on the qt (this means no cycling right? possbly a tiny one of a few days)
can i use baserock instead of pvc or in addition 2?
heres the question what kind of paint (exact name/brand) do i paint my bottom and back walls with ?
also is the glass at all permiable so the chemicals in the paint can get to thte water?
i know tht if you use windex on your glass thee is a chance tht the glass may be permiable and the windex leaks into your tank reulting in a unhealthy/dead tank

any advice would be great
no big rush because it wont be set up for a few weeks/months. the 90 is cycling and wont buy a new fish intill all the old ones goe in settle in and make sur they aare all okay

have a good night/weekend

Bill, you will not need to paint the back and sides being it is going to be under the cabinet...................did you not think I would respond to this in my domain? lol

ehhhhhh wasnt sure but since its under a stand wont the light create a reflection?
well my parens are once again flippuin out on me cus they dont think its necessary to buy another 2o gal for a qt and use my old 12 for one..
they dont get a yt wont do well in a 12 for awhile or him with my other fish
its starting to get dumb but im gona do it anyways. too bad ***)
so you dont think reflection is going to be bad?
do i leave the light on under the stand when im not around or keep it off?

Where di yu ever come up with the theory that windex leaks into a tank andkills fish. Thats a bunch of bull hockey...Use any kind of paint you want, its not going to hurt a thing......brand means nothing, use latex, acruylic enamel, lacquar krylon, rustoleum it all works.....only difference is drying times. Why wold you paint the bottom of a tank for anyway? Back I can see but not bottom.. no need.
I have used Windex and other glass cleaners my tanks for years on end and have never had problems........

well i was reading tht some ppl have painted the bottom of the tank with paint to reduce reflections.. i know it farfetched but i wasnt sure.
so i can use any paint..
i assume i use the paint tht dosent have a glossy finish and use the semi-flat(gloss)
btw the thing about the windex i got from the lfs.
you cabt gurt anything from being too carefull i know glass can be permiable so i wanted to take precautions not worth losing hundreds or dollars of fish when you dont hae to use a chemical and get the same result

Bill, the paint is ok as long as you get a non-toxic paint. Also if the tank is going to sit on the floor then you don't have to paint the bottom, but if it were on a metal stand then you would want to. You are also quite correct that windex should not be sprayed on the tank. The mist can get into the water. Always spray all chemicals away from the tank onto a rag/paper towel (your choice of cleaning material).

NOn toxic paiant does not have a hill of beans to do with it if its n the back of a tank. There must be thousands of tanks paianted with acrylic enamel spraypaint like rustoleum or fusion or reg krylon and they are all far from being toxic. Its outside the tank, not inside the tank, and you could use lead based paint and be perfectly safe. Toxicity is not rally an issue since it s not in contact with anything but the glass.....outside the tank.
Using windex as psreviously stated is not the same as spraying windex on a tank. Glass is not permeable, at least not by anyhting that the average home owner has access to.
It matters not gloss or flat or semi, its allgonn a look glossy inside the tank due to the glass, but gloss is best from a clean up and durability issue outside the tank., I use what I have and never had problems with gloss, semi or flat or satin.....
