Tank Setup... Start --> Finish

I wanted this thread to be helpful to everyone. I'm not the only one that has done this (maybe?), and I'd like to put my setup of my tank out there to the whole board, that way everyone can see it from start to finish.
This will probably be a relatively long post because I'll be asking questions as I go along, and ESPECIALLY I would like to hear other's comments/suggestions/advice as well.
How does that sound to everyone?

Here is the Tank. It's a hex obviously, but this presents a good challenge on water circulation. Dimensions -- Each Panel is 12" X 24"... What's the volume on this?

Well, I didn't like the beat up finish and the oak color...I have a ton of black furniture in my apartment...I should coordinate that way (plus, I just like the look of black contrasting all of the colors of a reef).
So, I painted it black. It's possible that I'll have to touch it up here and there. It was about 2am when I was doing it. :D It still has the masking on in this picture.

Here I just took off the masking...
Also, since I didn't paint the inside of it, it's deceiving on what it actually looks like. Look at that friggin' shine too!!! :D

I'm going to be checking the tank for leaks. How should I go about this? What if I find some leaks? I planned on filling it a *little* at a time and just watch it.
It's a glass aquarium, so if I do find some leaks, what should I use to fix them?

fill the whole thing with tap water. if it starts leaking, go too home depot, and buy 100% silicon stick for a kalk gun (2$). Re-silicon all the seams.

Silicon...got it...
I think that I'll just try filling it up a little at a time though with tapwater. I don't want to have 42 gallons start to leak and then i have to run to home depot! lol

fill it in the bathtub, and then be prepared to bail out the water if you see it start to sprout leaks.
as for silicon, make sure it doesnt contain a fungicide, you will find a tube that is labeled aquarium safe in the same asile, i would shell out the couple extra bucks for that if i was doing the buying.
