Tank size for a mantis shrimp

My LFS has a gorgeous mantis shrimp that is about 5-6 inches long. I am thinking about setting up a 2nd tank just for him. What is the minimum tank size for one of these? I have a 16 gallon hex sitting around doing nothing but I'm not sure it its big enough since its much taller than it is wide. I'd say its probably about 15 inches across at the base.

i have a peacock in a 15gal. i chose it over a 10 gal. for the thickness of glass.( he's a smasher) he swims all around the tank. i think the hex wouldn't be long enough for it. they don't swim up unless it's feeding time!! i'm currently researching to build him a 20 gal. 1/2" thick acrylic tank.

I'm guessing you're looking at a Peacock mantis, Odontodactylus Scylarrus, if that is the case you should look at a 25-30g tank. I'm sure a 20g would suffice, but I'm for giving the animal plenty room to spare. When/If you get him Post Pictures! I love seeing hobbyists getting into mantis shrimps ***)

My 4 inch Peacock resides in a 3 gallon Acrylic. He spends his life in his burrow and only leaves to smash the crap out of his victims long enough to blugden them and pull em back into his abyss of death!!!
I have him in my bedroom on an endstand. It's great except for when he decides to smash something into pieces at 5:00am!!!!!

4inch peacock in a 3g?.... Unless you meant to type 30, You seriously need to get that animal a larger aquarium. I don't think I would even put a 1" mantis in a 3g.

Yep 3 gallon is correct. It is temporary though. I am upgrading him to a 12 gallon Acrylic as soon as it cycles.

12g is also a bit too small for a 4inch peacock... sorry to say you need atleast 100l or ~26g for this animal at max length around 6-7inches.

Wow! I never would have imagined I'd need so much room for a critter that never leaves his burrow!! I'll have to start doing some price checking!!
