Ivan, I don't think it's the type of wood as much as it's the finish you use on the wood. For my stand I used aromatic cedar and maple finished with about 6 coats of lacquer. An alternative finish that is fairly popular is Spar Varnish. To finish the inside of the stand I used an anti-mold primer and a high gloss white enamel.
Hope this gives you a few ideas!

Hmm, thankyou, I went from no clue to some clues but still I don't really have much ideas of what those are but thankyou for your advice. I did write them down and maybe I can go to "Four-letter word" depot and just show them the names and they may be able to help me.

LOL Yes, Home Depot or Lowes should be able to point you in the right direction. Tell their paint people what you're trying to do. Since this is the stand we're talking about, almost any waterproof finish will work, it all depends on what kind of "look" you're after. Once you get their advice drop a note on the forum and let us know what they sold you before you open the cans LOL there are several people here who have built tanks and/or stands and the odds are, one of us has had experience with whatever they recommend.
Good luck :)

:) Thank you very much. I need a better looking stand so badly. The one I have right now, also DIY, is really lousy. I first thought I wasn't going to be too serious about this tank but then right now I kinda got addicted to it cause I hardly find a hobby. So, I guess that's good news that I got addicted.~~~
