Hello, I have a 55g reef tank and am unable to lower the Nitrates which are at 180ppm
. I have had this tank for 1 1/2 years and the Nitrates were like that from the jump cause it is in my Tap water. I have had no problems but in the last month or so my corals have begun to die and are having major problems
. I am considering swithching to a FOWLR so I don't lose all of my money I have put into my corals. Any Advise?

To be honest I do a 30-50% water chang once monthly.
Thats fairly reasonable...My parents used to live in Montesano, I know the water there was absolutely horrible, it can't be much better there in Olympia. Have you considered getting an RO/DI system? It wouldn't cost you too much to get perfect water. What is your current fish list?

My fish are a yellow tang, cinnamon clown, percula clown, yellowtail blue damsel and a green chromis. I don't have that many fish so I don't think my tank is overstocked. The water here is junk and that is why I was considering a FOWLR.

If you moved the corals (if still alive) and the tang that would give you enough hadiness leanenancy (bad spelling) to address this over time with water changes and such.

Just go to the grocery store and get some RO drinking water. It's usually only $1 a gallon and start doing your water changes with that. You can mix the salt the day before and let it sit over night so you know it is mixed well. That way it wouldn't cost you too much.

there is no reason to get rid of everything as long as you address the problem in a timely manner.

you can even go to walmart and buy ro water for around 30-40cents a gallon... are you sure your test kit is correct? i wouldnt think corals would live long at all with trates that high?

In another thread you said you have your water delivered to you from an Seattle aquarium and here you say you use tap water, which is it?
How do you know that the nitrate level is 180? I do not know a kit that will go above 100 or at least I have never seen one. I even have the electornic nitrate meter from American Marine and it doesn't have a calibration fluid for higher than 100.
