Tank Temp...The Debate Continues, And I'm Starting To Be Swayed

OK, here's the deal...My A/C Unit in my house went out the other day...won't be fixed until Thursday...
So...I came home Saturday night to find my house was 86 degrees, and my tank was just under 84 degrees...don't know how, but nothing died...if anything, everything looked happier.
Now..over the next few days of icing my tank down mid day, I have kept a temp of 80-82 degrees fairly constantly, whereas I was going 78-80 degrees prior.
Yesterday I did a water change, and noticed that my pod population has become visibly more active...you can see little pods crawling all over the glass near the sand. My mini brittle stars have come out of the rock and to my surprise, have apparently grown in number, and size. I also have what I can only assume is a baby sand star on my glass (I assume this because it is similar to my existing sand star), although not entirely developed...(only 3 arms, and little bumps where the others are growing - definitely a star, and moving all over the glass.)
So, my tank seems to be doing better at the higher temp. I have always been told 78-80 degrees is the range to keep, but now I am questioning it.
Thoughts?

84 seems abit high for me and im sure its to high for fish and corals. Ive been at 80 - 82 now for 1 year ive got both fish and lots of corals.....

Hard to say...it's still really small...but no, I have no corals yet...that's the next addition.
The star I have is brighter in color than those in the pic, but the arms may be similar...not sure if that's just because it's still developing though.

buzz, i was in the smae situation as you a while ago. I always tried to keep my tank temp at 78-80, bu tone day when a fan went out it climbed to 84 and i have never seen all my corals look so good. Now i try to maintain it at the 82-84 range, and have no problems. I have three fish in my 20 gallon tank and they are all doing just fine, coral polyp extension is just amazing. ive never seen them get so large before in my life!
good luck

I'm in Chicago. In the summer my tank's temp is about 84-89. If it gets to 89 I always turn on my house air conditioning. I recently moved. I think it was the same before I moved. The high temps never bothered my fish. Before I moved I had about an 8" sohal tang, three 5" purple tangs, about an 8" blue hippo tang, and about a 3" maroon clown fish. All those fish were purchased online as babies or small fish.
The fish were all kept at a friend of my wife's house. The sohal died first. Then 2 of the purple tangs died.
After I moved I bought about an 3" kole tang. When we got our fish back he gave us about a 5" mono argentus that he was going to get rid of. I think it's a brackish fish.
Does anyone know if it is reef safe?
And I don't remember temps around 85 ever bothering my corals when I had them.

I am from the Caribbean and spent a lot of time in the reef....
That's the reason why I have never considered buying a chiller...!:D

In the summer mine is about 82-84, and winter 78-80. It got up to 86 once last year and my shrimp died, but Im not sure if that was related to the temp. I dont have any corals, but fish and live rock and pods seem fine at around 84. The LFS guy said things start to break down (inverts etc) higher than 84 though.

WOW! I hope not because the average temp where most of our critters come from is 84 - 86. I think stability is a LOT more important. Going from 84 up to 87 is't going to stress anything. But going from 77 up to 85 is going to kill a lot of animals. I believe that's where a lot of misinformation comes from.
