Tank Too Hot

My tank hit 84 degrees even before I turned on my UV. After a couple of days with the lid up and a box fan blowing on the tank the temp came down to 80. I also propped the light up about a half inch above the glass top.
Now, with the lid down (evaporation and jumping fire fish concerns), the light still propped up and a smaller (and quieter) fan blowing accross the top, the temp is around 81-82. I keep my house about 76-77 and only run the light about 7 hours per day. The light came with the tank and is nothing special (I don't know the watts right now).
Is there anything else I can do? Is 81-82 okay for the long term (rest of the Summer)?

I had a similar problem except I'm running MHs. The three things that I found to work are:
1) lower the temp in your house (mine runs at 71)
2) prop open the canopy with a pencil, or something plastic of similar size. (I use the veturi connectors to my powerheads)
3) set a fan to blow across the front of the tank's glass. It helps by about 2 degrees and doesn't really evaporate much water.
I've also read about people putting the freezer packs in the sump (if you have one), or getting a chiller, but they can be expensive.
Hope this helps.
BTW, what do you think could add so much heat to your tank? Window, lots of powerheads/pumps?

I have aqrylic over the top of the tank to keep fish from jumping out. Is that bad making the temp go out ?

Basicly your tank cools itself by evaporating water. When you add any type of solid cover IE glass or acrylic tops it prevents the water from evaporating thus causing the water temp to rise.

I was wondering because external pumps don't add heat to your water like internal ones do. Thats all :D

Internal pumps are pumps that are fully submerged under water. The heat from the pumps motor would then heat the water some.......not a lot, just some.

i have two internal pumps which pump 900 GPH at a 4 ft head hight... when i turned one of them off, my temp went down about 2 or 3 degrees..... so i have left it off.
