Tanks sizes for sump

I was going to put a 55g tank under my 125 and use it for a sump until I realized the 55g was 21" tall and my stand is only 24" tall which would not leave any room for plumbing and getting skimmer cup out to clean. I came across a website that said a 40g long was 48Lx12Wx16H which would give me a little working room above the sump. Can anyone confirm that?? I am wanting something 48" long since it will fit under the 6ft stand and as big as possible which im guessing is the 40 long depending on if the website was correct on its measurements.

hum.. thats a hard call.. i dont know of any tank sizes to tell you it can fit but.. i can tell u know my cousin kinda solve his sump/stand size problem... well the thing was is that his stand was a open back stand.. so it was closed off on 3 sides.. and the 2 by 4's when spaced far enough out so that he could fit his 55 gal just perfectly between the 2 pillars.. so what he dis was make a 'platform' the same height as the stands bottom.. so he set his sump half inside and half outside the stand... that way.. he can do pump, skimmer, ect maintence from the bcak like.. but yet still hidden from view in the front..

went to lfs and he had a 60 long that should work just fine. The measurements are 48Lx17.5Hx15D. So I still get the length I was wanting and the shorter height will help be able to clean skimmer cup and add water into sump. Anything will be better then the 30 gallon rubbermaid container im currently using

Just so you know I did the math and 48x17.5x15 comes out to 54 gallons. Not far off I know but just wanted to let you know in case it mattered.
Just so you know how to get the proper gallons from the container you are looking at the equation is L x H x W divided by 231 equals gallons.

I just did the calculation as well at got the same number you did. I measured the tank myself so I know the measurements are right so either the LFS doesnt know what he is talking about or the maker of the fish tank is exagerating on how big it is.
Weird thing is that I took the measurements of a 40gallon tank 36x18x16 and it comes up to 45 gallons. Same with a 55gallon 48x13x21 comes up to over 56 gallons when you convert the numbers.

just went online to a website to see what there measurements were for a 60 long and theres are 48x15x17 so really a 60 long isnt truely 60 gallons.

heh.. now this funny....so are all our tanks really the gallon size they say ther are?? lol.. probaly not.... lol i'd calculate my tank size but it's a 6' bow front.... lol.. not like the gallons it holds really matter to me.. just nice to know.. ( dont matter cuzz it is what it is.. and theres a lot of water missing because of live rock surface area placement..)

i just seen a post of this :
today.. and agree.. it should be in every post.. she's sexy darn the banana..

You are right the tank sizes are nominal when you refer to the actual gallons. Also when you add rock and sand the water content is further diminished, That is why it is really good to know exactly what the water content is in your tank from the start so you can account for the water displaced by the rock and sand.
Just some food for thought thats all.
