It could also be a snail falling off the window and hitting it's shell against another snail or the glass. I hear that many times in our 75.

I actually read an article and it talked about how mantis shrimp have this cetain nerve structure or sensor in their eye. Iy lets them see a completly different spectrum of light that like nothing else can see. They have their own secret language is one of the things they said.

pistol shrimps are good, they don't eat anything that is alive as far as tank specimens go. I like the hyposalinity idea, that's what I would try. If you end up with a pistol and don't want it, then they are probably worth a few bucks at your lfs.

you said you took the rocks out and inspected it. and you still heard the clicking. so did you hear it when the rocks were out of the tank. or when they were returned to the aquarium. by chance is this a new tank, possibly the stand....i would possibly try iodine dipping the rock, if it is a shrimp of some sort, it will rush out of the rock when being dipped... i would go with last option if it comes down to it...
