do you have corals too?
i dont think its as bad of an idea if you just have fish.
i think it can aid in algae blooms.. and you never know whats in your tap water. but some people do it and pull it off just fine.

Tap water contains all kinds of metals and contaminants that will most likely cause algea outbreaks sooner or later. You may be okay now, but it will eventually catch up to you. There are a few who get by with it, but in general, the use of filtered RO or RODI water is undisputedly recommended.

There are to many unknowns when it come to what comes in most city water...Some may use more chims then others, but one thing for sure none of it is good for a salt water setup. As said before all may look just fine but one day it will catch up with you. I've been there. One of my first tanks I did with tap water worst mistake ever. It ran well for a few months. Then one day out of the clear blue it all turned green and when I say green I mean it was all green. The rocks the sand the glass even a few snails. The only thing I could do at that point was take down the whole tank. Boil the rocks(in RO water) throw the sand out clean the tank with vineger and start it all over again. Do yourself a faver do a 100% water change(not all at once) but get that water out of your tank. You will thank us in the long run.

heres what you do. get a glass full of tap water and test it for all the things you can (there are even places that will tell you the water peramiters) the biggy is chlorine, luckly there are products fot this, personally i use my tap water and the use brightwell aquatics chlorine treeatment
. as always buy in bulk you will save big money

They my very well remove chlorine but those trements will not take out everything that would be harmful in a salt water tank. And that just the additive what about the metals and the other unseens. Maybe it just me but using tap water almost made me walk away from this hobby.

Yup you would be suprised how high the phosphates in city water can be!

Age old discussion here lesljohn. You will get mostly the recommendation not to use your tap water unless it is run through a RODI filter first. You and your tank would do best to heed this advise. You can and will find people and LFS's that will tell you they have used there tap water for years and never had a problem. But not many. Best advice is to use the best things you can for this investment you are into and that includes pure water.
