FWIW. Your water company can supply the make up of your water. Mine is available on line for example, and has Nitrates and Nitrites in it.

All tap and/or ground water has nitrates/nitrites in it...There are however certain things to watch out for that will vary by region. Also those water reports will not tell you about the spikes in water quality, generally during the summer months in areas where you have a diminished water supply. In some areas the concentrations of the chlorine variants, lead copper and other heavy metals can be quite substantial.

hey stupid question (im new) but where does the ro/di "go"? I know where its installed if you're hookin it up to your main water system in the house.. but for people who have 30 gallon tanks saying they are puttin one 'in', where does something like that go? I have a 10 gallon tank and am using tap water.. but when i get my 40 -- from what ive been reading here -- i will get the ro/di...

The RO/DI water goes into a big trash can that you keep next to the RO/DI unit and mix the salt water in it. 2Quills has a pic of his setup and If I had the trash can, I would do that too. Ask him to post that pic again or have him PM it to you.
I dont have a RO/DI unit. I get water from sprawlmart (culligan system at $0.37 a gallon) and mix it in an 18 gallon tote in my kitchen. I then place the tote on my dinning room table and syphon it into the sump for water changes.
