It depend what filefish your talking about. A good book to learn about fishes and whether or not there reef safe is "Marine fishes 500+essential-to-know aquarium species" The book is written by scott w. michal. According to the book the vast majority of filefishes are not reef safe. The tasseled filefish can only be placed with big stinging inverts like the carpet anenome.

Hi:
I've Had tassled files in the past , great fish...for a fish only.
They will chase down and eat any moving shrimp, they didn't bother hermits. At the LFS it didn't seem to bother any of the LPS which were in the tank, but it would occasionally nibble on some soft corals. Overall i don't think its eats much coral, but i wouldn't risk it. the get real goo dsize too, mine was about 5-6" after a yr or so.

Its color and its paper back. It is really good book. It tells what the fish eat, how hard they are too take care of, if they are reef safe, what size tank they should be in, and a brief description of the fishes personality.
