Share your potato salad ingredients...
The one I like best is the one grandma and my mom made. Neither one of them are around anymore. My wife and I have tried to make it many times, we get close, but still not the same. I know what's in it, but getting the portions right is the problem. Taste nothing like the Barf in the can stuff.
German potato salad:
Potatos
Bacon
Bacon grease
Onion
Vinegar
Sugar
flour
Now, the funny thing is, when I was stationed in Germany, the potato salad we ate at many local guesthaus was nothing like German potato salad above. This might have been the region we were in.
Potatos
Vinegar
Chicken stock
Onion
Veg oil

it is very good, the apples add a great flavor. I dont like onion and the apples give the crunch without the onion flavor(kinda sweet). to be honest, i hate mayo as well, but i dont use store mayo, i beat some eggs in canola oil and corn starch with onion and garlic spices to make my own(doesnt taste nasty like store bought).

(kinda sweet).
I didn't at first make that connection, nice substitution.
Don't get me wrong. I eat mayo tater salad all the time, however, if there are two to choose from, I will instinctively pick the one without mayo. Now if it has apple bits, I may try it first.

Potatoes red, with the skin still on)
Red onion
Miracle Whip
Salt
Pepper
Boil the potatoes and slice while still warm. Mix in the chopped onion and top with the Miracle whip, also while still warm.

Zman, I was such a dork I was actually looking forward to the FOOD at Oktoberfest...
Yep, just not the same any two places on the planet. Sorry to say but your grandmother's recipie is probably ONLY still around where she grew up amongst friends and sisters of decendants that were taught at the same time.
Legendary recipies are laughed at only by people that have never tasted them.

I don't want to be drunk in public, I want to be druck in a bar.
Exactly what I thought when I saw the title.

My wife laughed at me when I ordered the bratwurst and saurkraut, until she tried some, the I think she ate more than me.
