Tattoos on your doctor or lawyer?

Darth doesn't look that bad. I mean, long hair, tattoos and all... I'm sure he is well spoken and articulate. As long as he respects me as a person, and I know that he is kidding when he says some stuff, I would still probably do business with him. To me, what is worse than having tattoos and long hair is talking to a businessman in a business suit who is an absolute idiot when it comes to business, marketing, common sense or life in general... which I have come across a few. Some of these college students that get their degrees know absolutely *nothing about how business actually works.
I have been around in the real world long enough to know not to judge someone until they speak.
That being said, there are still people out there in this world that want their salesmen and marketing experts to look professional - and that's great and all... but I'm sure Darth runs retail businesses. Which means that I don't give a *care what the owner looks like - as long as the product/service is good/great and for the right price..... and that, my friend, is how business works.
* The asterisks are me trying to censor some of the stuff I say. After all, it is a family forum.
**Darth, I got your back.

Darth,
I'm so sorry to hear you did that to yourself. I'm glad you managed to to do well in spite of your ugly black "prison tats". When you are talking about doctors and lawyers, physical appearances count a great deal...It's the first impression a person gets, and if you look like a punk, you don't get the chance to see where or how far you could have gone with those like myself who are afraid of scary "jailbird looking" people.
In a perfect world I imagine folks would not be judged by looks. We do not live in a perfect world, so first impressions count in the business world. You have to admit that what you decide to ink on your body comes from the the deep inside of your soul...it's permanent, and is your self expression. What makes you think an ugly black alien skull on your neck is the sign of a nice trust worthy guy?
My guess is you meet many of your clients over the phone or e-mail, and first looks wouldn't matter then. Once somebody gets to know another person, 99 times out of 100, in spite of first impressions, they are alright people. After folks talk to you on-line or the phone, when you meet them face to face the only comment, if they bothered to comment, would be that you don't look like what they expected.
I consider you a very bright person (from witty comments you always offer up) none the less, I think those black ugly tattoos was stupid to mar your body with, and LOL... Possibly not the only dumb thing you ever did, as is the story of life for all of us.
From a Christian and Jewish religious perspective (I don't know about other religions on the subject), Most very religious people believe it's against the Bible teachings. (quick note: I happen to personally think folks who go that route are mistaken, since the scriptures only say to not mark your body for the dead
. Making yourself ugly, or different with tattoos was not the Prohibition IMO, that God meant).
So while you may be a very smart nice business person...big black tattoos are still ugly.
Why are you sorry? Tats were my choice. I fully understand there are people that will make judgements of others based solely on their chosen appearance. And to be honest I a customer or potential business associate doesn't like my appearance and chooses to go elsewhere due to it, I actually prefer that. If your mind is not open enough to look past a persons appearance then you are not going to be open or receptive to knowledge I can impart to you concerning what ever problem you were comi g to with in the first place. My businesses take a different approach to animals than the "norm".
My appearance has not harmed my business one iota. In fact it makes me more memorable. I get stopped in public by people because they recognize me from my business, saw me in the paper/news or saw me at local radio events (friends with some djs here) discussing my businesses. One of my businesses was voted best in the city a few years including this last year. So obviously my tats aren't harming things. In fact most of my customers ask if I have gotten any new work done.
Home Depot when I worked for them part time asked me on two occasions to become an assist store manager in hopes of going on to be store manager. I turned them down. Last time frank Blake came into the district he specifically came by the store I worked at to talk with me.
So don't be sorry for me and don't think I did these things successfully in spite of myself. Most people are willing to look passed tattoos. Those that can't I dot need to deal with.

My nephew got all tatted up while working at HD, they could care less.

LOL...Darth, I am sorry you "uglyfied" (not a real word) yourself. My saying I was glad that you did well in spite of the big black ugly tattoos was a genuine "I'm glad you are successful" but I was being a little silly when I said "in spite of"... Only because I like color, and not ugly black. I'm not saying so much against tattoos, but rather my dislike for the choice of tattoo. If you are going to mark your body forever...do it with some taste. Those ugly prison tats are not attractive. That doesn't mean a well done work of art has to be colorful, sometimes black looks right...but a prison type of tattoo ... a cross, a gang symbol, a black tear on the corner of your eye..hate written on one hand and love on the other...looks ridiculous and f-ugly.
You are successful, but you are not a doctor or a lawyer. A lawyer will want to be on the good side of the judge and look professional, and want to make a good impression on others. I don't think a doctors tattoo would matter as much as with the lawyers position. I feel the same way about a President, he shouldn't have tats either...he has to travel to other countries where first impressions count.
If a lawyer wants a tattoo, he should have it in a place he can cover up for court and for certain clients that would be put off by them.
Having tattoos out in the open where you can't cover them up, locks a person into a certain frame...a person should be able to change up when needed. It just makes good sense. So be a rebel, but not a stupid rebel. A person has many roles to play in life, and sometimes you need to wear a tux...A tattoo is too permanent to put out in the open where it can't be covered.

Fugly is in the eye of the beholder. I think moomoos on old women are ugly. The red hats old ladies wear in that red hat society are ugly. Flip flops are ugly (actually the feet within them).

Read through that. Take a look at specifically the professor of public speaking here at the university of New Mexico.
As well as one of the top New York lawyers.

Wow! I'm going to rush out and get a sleeve tat today!
Not really, but that public speaking professor at UNM was crazy!

All the folks on that site can cover their tattoos except this guy...he is a vet so I guess dogs really don't care since they don't see color like we do, but he looks like a silly circus sign. I take back what I said about color..too much is too much.

at least this guy had some consistency.

I have tattoos on most of my upper body. Including a giant mandosaur skull on my neck. Lets see who knows what that is. I run two successful business. Interact with customers, politicians, lawyers, judges, and doctors regularly. Hell, I was just at the mayors ball last weekend by invitation only. My customer base mostly comes from the top 5%. Most of my tats are black no color and could be considered prison tats.....lol.
I am of the perception that physical appearance should not dictate the person. Some of the most intelligent people I know have significant tat work on their body.
I come from Key West so you'd fit right in with elite in this city! Throw in a tat of a rooster on your chest and you'd be considered a hottie.
Not that I'm saying you're not one now.
Myself, don't care about how folks decorate their bodies, but I wouldn't like to see sexually oriented tats on my doctor or my lawyer. I'd have to say, that in court, unless a lawyer tats his face or hands, they aren't going to be seen (they wear suits in court).

Flower. If you needed life saving brain surgery and the only doc qualified to do it had "jail house" tats. Would you allow your prejudices to cause you to die. It amazes me the amount of judge mental douches in this world that disregard a persons qualifications and base their opinion of the individual off their appearance and after that their speaking ability.
Beth, no room for a rooster on my chest. I get a bat tattooed for every year me and my wife have stayed together. Since our anniversary is Halloween it is fitting.

LOL...I would die because I wouldn't allow such a surgery. I'm crippled because I won't have knee replacements...I'm waiting for the great minds to come up with a clone method to replace my knees with younger ones of my own DNA...
My only concern with a tattooed lawyer would be the attitude of the judge, not my prejudice, but that of those in authority for which my livelihood might depend. I can't imagine anyone going to court to make a statement to society...people go to court to win their case.
I realize now what happened...The caption was for the one below it and not the picture above it...oops. However I went back to the Link...since he was 12???? I can imagine any 12 year old thinking that a carnival face would be awesome, but most kids grow up and understand how silly they were as children. I didn't say he was a bad guy, I said his tattoo was just too much. The design is too busy to be attractive...he even had his ears tattooed black. I like his piercings, they look good on him, I like bald men.
I consider myself a very unattractive person, so I don't hate people for their looks (LOL...I wear muumuus). I'm just opinionated on what art I personally think is good looking. A tattoo is a work of art, so are paintings, sculptures and a variety of other media. I don't like all paintings, and I don't like all tattoos. I have seen some really fantastic art on people. I have seen some really ugly expensive paintings. What I see hanging in public, or worn as body art for all to see, is up for criticism. I wouldn't point at the fellow and laugh, but if somebody asks my opinion, I give them my honest answer. I would be very careful to not hurt anybodies feelings.
All three of my grown children, whom I adore, have tattoos...lots of them. I like some of it, and some it I don't. My late husband had some skull with wings, it had something to do with being a paratrooper in the army, and his whole platoon had one. I like some tattoos, and some are butt ugly. My daughter regrets most of her tattoo choices, that's a shame because it's so permanent.
Oh and I might also mention: I like the lizard man, he looks like an alien. I love Sci-fi anything.
Oh and also...How romantic that you celebrate your anniversary like you do. I hope you can enjoy your 50th someday.

Crazy what happened with this thread after all this time. I like tattoos... generally. I do prefer to share my tattoos with only certain people and cover them for business purposes. Here's one of mine...

I never come into the aquarium, but since it's so slow around here I thought I'd check it out and I'm glad I did. I have many visible tattoos: neck X 2, both forearms, elbow, right hand, etc. I have more that you can't see when I'm wearing a shirt and long pants. I had these tattoos before completing nursing school, before working as an emergency department RN, and before working as a neuro trauma ICU RN. I had these tattoos before I was working my way through nursing school as a LifeFlight Paramedic. Not once during my career(s) in patient care did somebody say: stop intubating me, stop doing compressions, stop breathing for me.... stop saving my life, you have tattoos. Not once did a family member say, " This nurse here, I get that he's working on restarting my loved one's heart, but can you ask him to stop and find someone who looks different."
I have tattoos. I plan on getting more. They do not make me any more or any less capable of being the difference that saves lives. They do not make me any less capable of genuinely caring for other peoples' loved ones. To be honest, if I was a patient I would want me as a RN, because I know that I AM the difference that saves lives on a daily basis.
The point I'm trying to make here is that it's 2013 and the stigma of tattoos is changing. As a healthcare professional I had to study all types of other culture's so that I could care for them without being offensive or without breaking the rules of their religion (like no blood products for Jehovah's Witnesses). If I respect their cultures, then they should respect my sub-culture. If they don't, and they ask for another nurse, that's fine with me, but the nurse they get might not be as cool under pressure, might not know the contraindications of certain medications, and might not respect their culture the way I do and that Jehovah's Witness might just get some blood products.
