Tell me about protein skimmers

Nope, that skimmer is way over priced. I've seen it for $70. And it generally isn't a great skimmer, doesn't pull a lot of skimmate, lots of fiddling with to get it to work perfectly, and often breaks after a few months. Look into the Via Aqua, CPR bakpak, or Aqua C Remora.

Hiddenicon, I have a 29 gal and use the Aqua C Remora. Its expensive but worth they money, it works extremely well and in the long run pays for itself. (with the powerhead around $180).

Attn: Tizzo & Viper_930,
You got the pics I've been looking for (Remora & Bak Pak).

I need to know from both of you how much space (width primarily) those skimmers occupy behind the tank. My tank is 3 & 1/8" off the wall.

Mine extends almost 4 1/2" out from the back of the tank. But If you press it as close to the tank as possible then it will only extend 3". But if you have a glass top, it will stop the output tube from moving forward, so you will be stuck with the 4 1/2".
As you can see in my pic, the output tube is already pressing against the light fixture and glass top so I cannot move it any closer to the tank. You may have this problem if anything is in the way.

Thanks Viper, :)
Having it against the tank won't be a problem, the open space behind my lighting appears much wider than yours, most of the hood behind the light fixture was cut out, about 2 & 1/4" of open space.
Tizzo's Remora doesn't appear to be wider than yours so I shouldn't have a problem, just a matter of choosing.

Sorry it took so long, My Remora is exacly 3.25 inches, so it seems just a little to big for the space you have. HTH
