I have gotten a few fish from Advance Aquarium, they are about the only LFS around here that knows anything, but they are pricey. I ended up getting my LR from a neighbor that was going to college and didnt want her setup anymore. Price was right........FREE! I dont go near P**CO...the two we have here are pathetic. Animal Adventure is a few steps up from P**CO but I have not bought fish from them.. They have a pretty limited selection. Their LR looks like something they dug up out of a quarry. Not very nice. I'm pretty much stuck with online ordering around here, unless I want to drive to Milwaukee or Chicago.

Test for Nitrates once a month....do water change (5gal) usually once per month. I look for changes in my tank. If something looks unusual I might take a water sample to LFS. I don't stock alot of testers.
My tank maintenance is pretty low in general....I clean the glass as needed and prunes some algae every once in a while, and do top offs. Thats about it.

I test salinity usually once a week to make sure my auto-top off hasn't gone ape and pumped in too much fresh water.
I check nitrates/calcium once a month....nitrates are usually always 10. calcium is usually 450-480...roughly. Now that i've added a clam I expect to check calcium more often.
I also do not do water changes. I used to but have noticed no ill effects in the 9 months since the last one.

I check specific gravity every week just for drill. I also check PH and alk every week as well. I don't do water changes very often, but i have been doing a 20% once a month lately. I don't dose trace elements as much as I did either.
