temp at 83F, too hot?

Is 83F too hot for the tank or is it still ok? I try to keep it between 80 - 82 but it is around 83F with MH lights. I was going to add a fan to drop the temp but Ill keep it at 83 if that is still fine.

not too hot, but what does the temp drop to after lights turn off, a drop of more than 2 degrees is what is dangerous.
If I were you I would add a fan, keep the temp 81-82, and be sure your heater keeps the water at least 81 when the lights are off.

The correct temperature for marine fish is between 74-80 anything above 80 is dangerous
anything above 80 =
= death to fish. Corals and invertibrates need temps between 74-78. To be in safe conditions
we keep our tank at 76 and we also purchased a chiller to keep it at a safe temperature.
Good Luck

Not true...sorry to say.
Many different fish require different temps.
83 is not dangerous to fish, but as Birdy said, it's the temp swing that can be harmful.
I've had the temp in my Moray tank up the low 90's before, intentionally, without any harm to the fish.

I agree .... mine is a constant 82-83 ... I know people who keep the temp at 85 with no problem to fish or corals.
As stated, the key is consistency ... no more than a 2 degree swing either way.

Definitely not true. I have had mine go up to 84 in the summer time for days. The main thing like everyone else has said is consistency. If you know that it is getting that hot, try not to have it fluctuate too much.
A good method for keeping it cool is to blow a fan on the tank. That worked wonders for my tank in the summer when it was extra hot.
Like suggested, a fan would never be a bad idea to keep the halides cool.

I would disagree that it's entirely not true. With cold blooded animals the temperature of their surroundings dictate the speed of their metabolism. While there is some evidence a higher temp will make them more active, increase their food consumption and increase growth rate, there is also a theory it will drastically shorten their life span.
However this is generally more of a concern if you are running a warmer than 83.
83 shouldn't cause any noticable problems, however I personally would add a cooling fan in an attempt to make a slightly cooler and more stable.
That's just my two cents though.

That's exactly why I said it varies due to the species of the fish. Some fish, such as the Catalina Goby, need temps in the high 50's to low/mid 60's. Other fish, such as some Hawaiian or Australian fish are sometimes subjected to temps in the low/mid 90's with no problems.

Ok, thanks everybody. My temp only fluctuates 1.5 degrees between day and night. I might add a fan and see if I can get it to 1 degree or better because summer will come soon and Ill hate to see what happens then. My wife likes to turn off the air and open the windows quite often during the summer.

Keep in mind that by adding a fan, you're going to have faster evaporation and you'll have to top off more often.

Yeah I know. The MH lights are already killing me with the water evaporation. I'm glad they are only on 7 hours a day.

IMO, 83 is acceptable, but very high for a reef. Will it kill your fish? I dont know. I know it is not normal as per 'in-the-wild'.
mod - url is info ..

Hawaii surface water tempeature is 72-81, season depending
http://www.aims.gov.au/pages/facilit...ies-index.html
GBR (Agincourt Reef - Lat 16°2S / Long 145°49E) , surface water temp is 75 - 83, season depending.
If you look at the daily max/min at the GBR, there is a daily delta of 1 deg c.
