I keep both my tanks at 80 and they are great. I dont think a few degrees up will hurt anything. if you really want it down, try a fan pointed at the tank.

I have a 12 gal Nano and my temp. is about 86 which is to high, so I have a fan blowing on it,and it is staying about 78 now. However I don't like that idea. Does anyone elso have this problem with the closed nano tanks heating up and what is your advise?

possibly a lower watt heater? smaller tank = smaller heater

Don't let the temp drop more than a couple degrees at a time.
2 things -
1 - Your heater could be stuck on. It should have a light that indicates when the heater is actually on. If you turn the knob down and the light stays on then the heater is defective. If you turn the knob and the light goes out then make sure you don't set it too low.
2 - More likely your lights are heating up the water. As stated earlier, 81 is fine, if not ideal for a reef tank. My suggestion would be to set your heater for 80F so that it doesn't cool off to fast after the lights go off.

Agreed, I have the 12 gallon nano and my daytime temp. was 81 and dropping to 78 at night. I ran a fan over the water surface during the day a couple of days and then decided it was better and easier to just keep it at a stable higher temperature than have the fluctuation from day to night from the lights. I keep my 50 watt heater at 81 degrees now.

My heater doesn't come on during the day. I have it set at 77. It's only a 50 watt heater, it's the lights that heat my water. Any other suggestions.

Fans, Chillers, or a cooler room. Those are about the limit of your options. It's not uncommom for lights to have a heating effect. How bad is the temp change?

The temp is about 81 during the day when the lights are out over night it drops to 78 or 79. Wouldn't the ocean temps drop the same way after dusk?

Consider the volume of the ocean. There are currents that generally neutralize it. The depths don't get any warmth from the sun.
2 degrees is generally considered within the safe range. The less you experience the better.
It's could be partially related to your house/room temperature in addition to your lights as most people tend to keep their house warmer during the day. Sometimes turning down the thermostat on your house a little or not having it heat as high in the morning can reduce the effect.

The shallow enclosed Lagoons have temperature fluctuation but not the reefs.

I decided to take matters into my own hands. I have a newer nano that has a fan and air vents on the top of the hood. I took a dramel tool to the vents and opened the slots a little. It has lowered my temp by 2 degrees,so I'm now happier.
