If the sump light is higher wattage it could be reduces in time or wattage to lessen the heat in the sump water. The Chaeto is tough.
In the summer around here floating 16 ounce plastic soda bottles full of frozen water in the sump helps on the bad heat days. Just do not change the temp. too quicly.

Easiest solution, just use a 5 dollar fan to blow accross the water surface.

It makes perfect sense, his lights are causing his temp to fluctuate. I had the same problem, before getting my lights my heater was on constantly and the temp was always at 78 degrees. once i got new lights my temp was 83 degrees when they were on and 78 when they were off. So you have to buy a chiller, or a fan to cool the water off. Keep the heater at the same setting, and my advise would be to keep the fan on at all times. Although you will deal with more water evaporation with this, you won't have those swings of "oh crap is noon and my temp is 82 degrees" you turn on the fan and it dips back down to 78. It needs to be constant, so keeping a fan on at all times will keep the water cooled at 78 during the day, and at night your heater will ensure the water stays at 78 and doesn't drop below.
Some people sync their fans with their lighting schedule - it just depends on your situation. I would place one fan on your sump at first (so that it isn't an eye-sore), then if that doesn't help either buy more fans, or place anotehr one on your DT.

haven't thought about that.
A fan will probably help some, I've noticed since temp has been warming up here that my tank temp has been up a few degrees also, even with fans, have had to turn the ac on to help. But I agree without the lights and heater off it should not be that high, you might feel of the moters running in the tank and see if one of them may be putting out access heat.

A fan will probably help some, I've noticed since temp has been warming up here that my tank temp has been up a few degrees also, even with fans, have had to turn the ac on to help. But I agree without the lights and heater off it should not be that high, you might feel of the moters running in the tank and see if one of them may be putting out access heat.

One more thing to try. The Chaeto in the sump does not need 24/7 lighting. It will grow like aweed still with reduced lighting. Just give it good flow.
Try this. Put the sump light on a timer opposite of the day night cycle in the main tank. This will help not only lowering unwanted heat. but will help too with keeping a stable day-night PH.

Thanks again I have no flow in the sump just waht comes in and what goes out the water does not really move I have the outgoing water to the sump into the sock so it is silent I was told I did not need movement for the chaeto and I was also told it needed light 24/7
This is how I get confused every one has a diffferent suggestion.
I would love to shut the light off even at noght when i go to sleep my cats are so noisey of this bright light.
But flow I really have none of

I forgot to mention I have glass tops of my main tank should I leave them on I am afraid of something jusmoing out so I leave them closed I see inthe pet stores thay have none
I plan on going out and gett ing a cleaner shrimp and I have seen them climb I am thinking that might be holding the heat in also?
