Signman that is a big temp swing shouldnt change more than 2 degrees or so during the course of the day. do you have a sump? bmaybe put a fan to cool sump ,worked for me.Cause where I live ,I dont really need a chiller, just on warm days before we put the A.C. on in the house. So on those days I put the fan on.Also have 4 fans in canopy, 2 going out . 2 pulling air in.

Your lfs is wrong about the 10k thing. IMO.

best advice on temperture i have found is learn where your creatures live. There are different section of the reef that have of course different temps. You can do you homework on the rest. I keep my tank at 75f. Everyone seems happy.

mine is currently 81.2. I just put the temp gage in yesterday, and it read 83.5. Yikes! I turned the heater down from 79 to about 75 know. Funny how these work. Gonna check it in the morning...

If you set it at 79 and it is "on" and tank is 82 you might have a heater issue. It should only click back on when temp dips down below 79. I had this happen once, that God I was home or it would have cooked my tank :scared:

the heater in the q/t tank does the same thing set at 79 and temp stays at 82 never goes higher than that the heaters shut off just doesnt hold the temp you set them at hold a few degrees higher

My heater broke one time, I noticed the light on the heater was staying on, so I looked at the thermometer and it read 91 degrees, I thought for sure my fish were gone. They all lived though. I cooled it done by throwing an ice pack in the water. I have never trusted heaters since.

steady 80-81 all year.
In the summer, I use a small clip on fan to blow across the water. Evaporative cooling works great. You just have to watch the top off water.
