temperature and evaporation

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with evaporation? My tank evaporates approximately 1- 1/2 inches of water a week. Of course that makes my salinity levels sky rocket so I have been adding fresh water to level it back out although I dont think that is a good way to do it. Also what is a good temperature on average for a tank.

If we knew what size tank you had it would help, because depending on the open surface area and how much movement you have over it that will determine how much it will evaporate. But just a guess that does not sound like a lot. You might want to add the water more often if you are worried about the salinity. Good Luck

go here for plans on how to make one for yourself, or search for something called a "doser" or an "auto-top-off system". They can be made from everything from plexiglass to a fuel can.
There are several topics about this on the equipment and DIY section of this bb.
There are also several that are commercially available. One that was recently reviewed in February 02 FAMA is called the Osmolator buy Tunze. It is supposedly ultra sensitive and can replace 1/2 ounce at a time if you want to get that picky... based on infra red and some other technology. View it at www.tunze.com if you dare!
