Tempered Glass

Is there a surefire method to test if your glass is tempered or not. I don't want to drill the back glass if it is tempered.

Yes, but you need special equipment. I don't remember what it's called... check with local glass shops, they may be able to test it for you.

Hey Quint,
Nice to hear from you. I guess congratulations are in order. So now that the honeymoon is over, how is that tank coming along?

I have done all kinds of glass work for 29 years now and I can sometimes tell if glass is tempered sometimes not. I look for a very small waves in the glass. With bright lights you can sometimes see it. You need to look at it at an angle. You may have a LOGO on the glass that will let you know for sure. The only other way to tell is with a special light that will show you the waves. At work we just break it and if it blows up it was tempered. Depending on the size of your tank the bottom will be tempered if it is a good size tank. It is cheaper to use tempered glass than it is to use thicker glass. I have also seen 55g front and back but not the bottom tempered hope this helps you.

i think it's pretty rare to have an aquarium with tempered sides. it's usually just the bottom pane.

I had a old 55 that had 1/4 tempered front and back I also had one with 3/8 that was annealed.

the mosaic would be quite imporessive too, My buddy tried (for some reason) to drill a hole in a skylight pane...... I got to see the results, it was pretty cool.
