Test Kit

Salifert doesn't use color charts at all. They use a titration method where you count the number of drips before it changes to a different color. It is pretty much idiot proof.

I ordered several of the Salifert test kits (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, calcium, alkalinity and phosphate) and they should be delivered today. I can take pictures and post them if it would be helpful to anyone. Let me know...

I should be getting my salifert magnesium, phosphate, nitrate, calcium, and alkalinity kits in the mail this week, $80 ouch. I'm searching the market for ammonia, nitrite, and pH.

If it is no bother, I would appreciate the pics. Thanks

My test kits were delivered yesterday
so here are the pics I promised. All of the kits are very similar in terms of the contents, so I only took photos of a couple of them as examples. If you want to see the contents of a particular test kit, let me know and I can open it and take a photo. Hope this helps...

Indy thank you for posting the pics. If it is no bother give me a couple close up pics on the directions, and maybe the color chart. This is very helpful, thanks again.

Just by the pics alone, the nitrate and ammonia were $34 alone. OUCH

Greetings

I will try to snap some close-ups of the instructions and color chart this evening and post them tomorrow morning.
The test kits aren't cheap, but the posts on this site almost exclusively point to this brand as the best and most accurate. My only complaint (I haven't used any of them yet - heck, I don't even have water in a tank at this point
) is that they come in flimsy carboard boxes. The test kits I used when I had a reef tank ~12 years ago were in plastic hinge-top boxes with foam inserts that would hold the supplies, syringes, test tubes, etc. I don't remember the brand name, but think that would be a very nice touch for kits that are highly-regarded. JMO
As far as cost: the test kits may be avaialbe elsewhere for less, but the best price I found (from a reseller that stocked all of the ones I was interested in) was:
Ammonia $17.99
Nitrate $17.99
Nitrite $14.99
PH $11.99
Calcium $22.99
Alkalinity $13.99
Phosphate $17.99
Hope this helps...

I just don't understand what makes it the best, when you have to compare to a color chart. Sounds like an opinion. I mean if you have to twist under lights, and take outside in the sun to make sure your color is right, all the meanwhile your neighbors and girlfriend think you are out of your mind. Why pay $100 dollars more for all the tests you need? That is why I want pictures of the instructions, maybe I am missing something.

Earlybird, if you can send an email to vpotts@accuratelabeldesigns.com about the "nifty site" you have stumbled upon, it would be appreciated.
