So what I am seeing is that some brands are better than others at specific tasks. Why even bother getting a master test kit then. Just when I thought I had it figured out... now I gotta go back to square one.
At least I stumbled across this post before I went and bought a master test kit. Now to decide what name brand to get for what.

I only use Seachem multi test kits (master kit). Each test comes with a regent to test and make sure the readings you get are accurate. So if the kit is old, or you get a funny reading you have a way to double check the kit...a feature I found delightful to have so I stay with that brand.
Just so you know....I had different kits because I had tried different brands and found certain ones ...example: the nitrate readings were so off I couldn't trust that test out of the API kit. or Sometimes I had run out of a certain test from the master kit, and the store not have the brand I wanted...I don't go out and get a test for this, and a different brand of test for that. It is way too expensive to buy a test seperately than to buy a master kit. With Seachem, I have to get a muti kit for regular saltwater, and another for a reef, which was expensive enough.
So don't go thinking you have to find all kinds of different brands...just stay away from certain kits such as Redsea and API. I recommend to get a master kit, it's cheaper.

Yeah... I found this out the hard way. I kept wondering why I was loosing my freshwater fish. I was testing my water and everything was showing zeros across the board. Went and bought another API master kit and found out that my old API kits had stopped working. There was a huge difference in the old readings vs the new readings.
I'll look into the Seachem kit. I noticed that alot of folks seemed to like the Salifert as well.

I'm sure Salifert is good, I only stuck with Seachme for the double checking ability. I am also a stick in the mud, if I find something that works I stay with it. If the product lets me down, I not only don't use it anymore, but I let others know of my woes concerning it.
I still say master kits are the best way to go, we spend so much money...it's like they see us coming. I only purchase indivual tests if my master kit is only out of a certain test. That's just me.
