When looking into buying a test kit what are the major elements that you should be looking for the kit to test. Also does anyone know of a good kit that they prefere over another one.

You should get the individual test kits, much better than the "Reef pack test kits" that are sold. The best brand for individual kits is Sailfert.

salifert all the way. confusing the first couple times you use them, but more accurate by far.

What kind of tank are you going to have: reef, FO? Do you have any test kits already? The most important ones to start off with are Ammonia, Nitrate, and Nitrite, (also get a refractometer to test salinity if you dont have one already)so you can tell when the cycle starts and ends. Once you start adding live stock your also going to want to get PH, and phosphate tests. If you go reef your also going to want to get magnesium, calcium, and alkalinity tests.

depends on how set up your tank is and what you want to do, but the basics would be:
ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, pH, Alk, Calcium, Phosphates are a good start.
evenutally iodine and magnesium if you're doing reef or to help with inverts. copper if you think you have a copper problem (can't keep inverts alive).

by the way, i had good results comparing my Hagen and new Salifert phosphate tests. the salifert though has a wider range or results where hagen went from Zero phosphates to .25 phosphates.
my red sea calcium test always came up over 500, where the salifert came in at 360. my red sea alk test always came in at zero, and the salifert came in at 7.4. my api ammonia (and others) always came in at .25 and salifert came in at zero. my api nitrite came in at zero, same as salifert. i can't remember what pH test i have (its in a little packet of powder), but was told not to worry about salifert pH kits unless i'm already ordering others because most tests are relatively accurate for pH.

just so you know, this site has the best pricing on all the salifert test kits that i've been able to find. only problem is they don't have the magnesium in stock :(
