Buy the FasTest Master Kit. It does ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH. It costs around 50 up front, but the refills are less than 10. The kit is reliable, easy to use, and accurate enough for a cycling tank, and the basics. I have used this kit from day one and I am very pleased with it.
A lot of people will reccomend salifert, and I agree that these are great kits. More accurate, but for the basics, accuracy is not neccessary. (well except for pH) If you can detect anything as far as ammonia, or nitrites are concerned, then there is a problem. The salifert kits are twice as expensive as the FasTest and they are not refillable. Go with FasTest

I reccomend NOT to go with a tetra "laborette kit" I bought one from my LFS and it sux! (only does ammonia, NO2, PH, & KH ....no Calcium or NO3) It has square test vials that are impossible to get a level amount of test water into. (IMHO, of course)HTH.

Well . . . a couple things to keep in mind here.
1. You could go out and spend like 200 bucks on the salifert master reef kit, and get EVERYTHING that you would need, and some things that will merely collect dust.
2. If your tank is still a new tank (less than 6 mo. old) Go with the FasTest kit I described above. Then go out and buy the individual salifert kits such as ca, and alk.
I have been reefing for over a year now, and the only things that I have test kits for or have ever had are the salifert Calcium and Alkalinity tests, and the FasTest Kit.
