Testing kits and refractometer

I have been using the dip sticks for my tests and a cup with the floating arm to test the specific gravity.
I need suggestions for strong testing kits and refractometer.
Preferably without breaking the bank!

Salifert are the best test kits but are a little expensive. Red Sea are also very good and cheaper. You can pick up a portable refractomer for $40. They work great.

Salifert test kits are very good, and worth the price. Shop around, you can probably find good refractometers for under $40 or $50. If you're going to be spending a lot of money on the tank and livestock, you should invest in good test kits and a refractometer.

How long will it take before Salifert test results start becoming unreliable?

ALSO SOME of their tests were proven not reliable, I think it was Magnesium and another one, if someone can chime in.

Which tests would you suggest for a reef? (i.e. nitrate etc...)

I have a reef and use API for most test they are cheep and simple to use.
