The basics: BEST TYPE OF SALT?

I've been in the hobby for several years now, but I have only used one type of salt (Oceanic) and everything has been going well except I have had a constant green hair algae problem (most likely caused by nitrate problems). I think it may be my salt, what have other people found to be the best salt in the industry?

Oceanic is good salt but with a pretty high calcium content. Where is your water coming from? Is it RO water? If you just started getting the algea then have you checked your filters on the water system if you use one? Or if you are using an RODI system when was the last time the filters were changed?

Salt will NOT cause algea. it's something else as stated above. I was using Instant Ocean before and had a horrible time trying to keep my calcium level up so I switched to Oceanic and am truly HAPPY with the results.

Oh I totally agree that salt will not cause algae, I just though that maybe it has a higher content of nitrates or is not as trace element rich as some other salts out there. So is the overall census that Oceanic is a good salt, I was considering testing out Kent salt, i'm pretty happy with there other products. I'd hate however to possibly stress out the fish changing the salt. Suggestions?

I love Oceanic salt. I have been using it for two years now with wonderful success. No algae issues at all.

If it is hair algae it is a lighting issue. More than likely you need to adjust the time with the lights on - you've got them on too much or you could be over-feeding the tank for that matter.

An experiment was done at a research lab in Florida that tested the actual affects and things that the different salts cause.... They used The nine top salts, put each into blank bags, only labeled by number, and used each different salt in an identical tank with the same LR, and everything for ten weeks. The researchers thoruhgout the entire process wanted to know what Letter G was....because it cause alot of problems incuding spikes and hair algae and stuff.... well they later found out that that salt was Instant Ocean salt, the best performance (meaning little effect on the tank other than the gravity of the water) was Red-Sea or Oceanic.... I will tryto find that kink that talks all about each and every detial of each salt, but yeah, I use Red-Sea, and i thinkits great!!!

I don't buy to much into these independent experiments like that..........The tanks are not identical, and no 2 tanks are identical......I've used Oceanic and wasn't majorly impressed with results people said, and low and behold all those issues with Cal and such.......could have just been a quality control issue.....I never had issues with Cal or algae, just didn't do anything special for my system.....I was a firm Reef Crystals, and through a deal started using Tropic Marin Pro, and actually have seen a difference. I've used the IO, Seachem, Kent and so on, and every tank is going to react differently....so I honestly think the experiment on so called identical tanks with LR and such is insane.....There is no way the levels were exactly the same on all the tanks.....

well.... i didnt find the linl but my buddy MAc knows the whole thing, has an article about it, it wasnt an independant test, it was the Florida Aquarium that did the experiment, and each tank was identical, they had nine ten gallon tanks, they broke up alarge peice of LR, into nine peices identical in weight and form...since it was all from one peice, they have creatures and chemicals alike.... this was a legit test, i have done tests myself and they are crap...... but this, cost 20,000 dollars to do..... it was a big thing. i have had trouble with oceanic, but not as many with others.....

The tanks were not identical.....Identical would be the exact same rock everything.....To much can vary.....

I used to use coralife and switched to reefcrystals I like it its not too expenseive. (I switched because of the higher initial calcium at time of mix) could have been the batch but in two five gallon bukets at 70 degrees with a SG of 1.021 (keep in mind it was just a home brew spur of the moment expiriment) the reefcrystals had a higher cal reading so I switched. My friend and mentor uses tropic marin Pro and loves it But I think its wayyyyyy to expensive.

I use Tropic Marin Pro and love it. I used to use Red Sea but in my opinion it didnt dissolve very well.
