The Best Salt?

Honestly, I don't think that is a "good" brand and an "awesome" brand. I think that each brand of salt has its benefits and detriments. I like tropic marin the best because it gives me the best results, but since I go through about 2000gal. mixes every two weeks, I can not afford to buy it wholesale. I get seachem for about 36 dollars wholesale and it gets the job done.

So alot of people in this thread say that Tropic Marin and Oceanic mix well with good calcium, pH, and other trace element levels good. Use it with RO/DI.
As far as switching between salt brands, Ive been told it shouldnt make that much a difference, but just for safety measures, do it in small water changes over time. Try to use the same brand every time just to keep things as consistent as you can.

i was wondering about that switching salt..... i just started to switch from red sea over to reef crystals. will this really kill every thing. because if so ill just stick to red sea.

HEY FISHY7! Where did you get your large pieces of coral. I've been searching around at different LFS and can NOT find a store that sells 'large' pieces like that. If anyone has any suggestions of stores, please let me know. Thanks.
I have a few places but i pretty much grow all my stuff. Sent you a PM of the places.

Every tank has different demands. I use -- and had to dose mag, and cal clor, to bring my levels correct. Oceanic is not consistent enough for me to use it. but agian IMO. Use whats best for you, again this depends on coral demans, if you dose, what you dose, what is the best water quality for your tank. ect, ect. IO and -- has been around since SW started I am sure the low mag and cal is just an isolated event and they will fix the issue. If marineland uses IO I want the same product. It keeps shamoo alive.

I see that several people have talked about Red Sea Coral Pro. What do you think of just the regular Red Sea Salt?

I have heard good things about read sea pro salt, just never used it. Also there has been some studies done with recent salts and seachem has posted some good numbers for reef tanks. Keep in mind as well use correct salt for specific demand reef vs FOWLR or agressive tank.
With this hobby there is no free lunch and no magic monbo jombo to cycle a tank in a week, or stop ick in its tracks with no harm done. I have tried to purchase the best test kits out there to keep track of my para. its up to us to test the water and correct it before we do a water change(thats what I do and correct the issue before the water goes into my tank).

I do not have much to add to what was said above as far as brand preference. I switched from Oceanic to Instant Ocean and have had good luck but find that it does not mix quite as well. Since my water parameters are better with IO, I will stick with it and just mix a little longer.
However, I would like to thank you for asking the question. It was a good one and there was quite a bit of good information in the responses I think. I too have only recently heard of not mixing synthetic with natural salt and have yet to read that anywhere else but this board so I was glad to see the response of some of the more seasoned hobbyists on that one. You never know 'til you ask the right people and there is a lot of good experience on these boards!
