thanks snake I am taking this one really slowly, next week some time I am going to do something I never do. I am going to pulleverything up off the bottom of the tank and vaccum my sad bed. I am also going to give all of my live rock a bath with the powerhead of doom (a return pump with a hose on it) to force as much crap out of the crevices as possible to de-impact my rocks and get any residue out that has not chemicly bonded with the rock. the amount of die off my tank exhibited is unprecedented for me. I am going to try and make the sand bed and rock and refreshed as possible. I will also be adding some more sand to deepen my sand bed as over the years it has gotten shallower and shallower. and again more waterchanges. my RO unit hasnt stopped in weeks trying to keep up with the waterchange schedule I have created. in about 2more weeks there will be less than 2% of the original water remaining by my calculationss right now I am down to about 6% hopefully the 98% waterchange for the finally will be enough to thouroughly re-iinvigorate my tank.

in a way I am kind of excited to do a total overhaul of my tank. I am sure it will look nothing like it does now when I am complete.
for vacuming the sand bed I am building a recycle vacume for the water basicly its a particulate filter powered by a powerhead so i can vaccum for a couple hours with out having to change the water. I intend to completly vaccume the sand then do a MASSIVE waterchange once I have vaccumed about as much as I can out. I will also have a couple standard HOB filters running on the tank with regular filter floss and carbon in them to assist in capturing particulate matter and organic compounds that escapes the vaccuming.

Wow, total tank overhaul. Well, it was probably needed. Good luck with that, and just let me know when you are ready.

Good luck reef. I think you will be amazed by the amount of stuff that comes out of the rocks especially. It never ceases to amaze me how they can look so clean and yet be so full of junk. Hopefully all will go well with your tank overhaul with no other unexpected glitches. Keep us updated.

ok my sand bed looks like a noob bed now.... I siphoned out the sand bed super slowly. I actually didnt bother with the recirculating I just did it like I would siphon a FW tank, only I siphoned really slowly by kinking the hose so I didnt straight suck out all my sand. this took the better part of 2 hours. here are some pictures from right after siphoning the water hasnt cleared out but I have an AquaClear filter that I modified by removing all the media except the sponge, the sponge I wrapped in poly sheeting to act as a particulate filter. I also had this running while siphoning. the last pic is of the poly sheet that I removed when I finished siphoning. I replaced it with a new sheet.
now here is hoping I dont re-crash my tank doing such a drastic cleaning.

if its possible I hate fleas now more than I ever did.
And just to clarify, in the title the "end game" is to indicate the end of the crash, I hope. its been a couple months long nightmare.

Im sorry about your crash and this info might not help anymore but you can spray a mixture of Eucalyptus oil and water on your carpets and furniture and it will keep the fleas at bay. Also if you wash your dog with some lemon juice in the soap it will kill fleas! (We have fresh Eucalyptus trees so I put some leaves under my couch and behind book shelves.) There are a ton of remedies for fleas without using chemicals maybe next time you can try them! Good luck with the rebuild!
