The cocktail shrimp method........

How long does the shrimp stay in the tank to kick things off, and or will ghost feeding get you to the same point? I know if a tank sits void of fish for extended time frames you need to drop a pinch every so often.

Well you just leave the shrimp in until you see the ammonia spike up to about 1. I have cycled with ghost feeding and it takes forever

Thanks for the reply, the reason I asked was that most--85% of the customers don't check their own water was looking for a time frame to give them. I have just been telling them to come back in 4 weeks to check lvls. Some ppl just have to have the GA aquarium overnight you know. Was looking to shave some time if poss.
Thanks

There is no time frame. It depends on the tank and the water movement. Tell them to cycle with live rock.

I cycled with live rock, no shrimp & no ghost feedings, and I was done in just under 2 weeks

Always use L|R, just wondering if shrimp quickened the cycle. My 90 gal. just finished its cycle, just over two weeks. 90 gal, 110 lbs LR 85 lbs. sand. In no hurry though. If I got every fish the wife wanted I'd be looking along the lines of a Olympic size pool.
Thanks ppl.

The shrimp will produce ammonia, but it takes a whole lot longer to grow the biological bacteria that will break it down. Live rock is the best way to go. Natural ammonia is best.

I used the shrimp and cured LR in a 12g.
Shrimp was in for 5 days, tank was cycled within 14 days.
I probably could have taken the shrimp out a day earlier, and the cycle was probably done in closer to 10, but I was trying to be cautious and conservative with this tank, as I'd screwed up my first.
